Hi, I’m currently in the midst of assembling Academy’s M7 Priest (oob.) I have most of the major assemblies built and almost ready to prime and start painting. My question is about the ammo. The instructions call for flat black. I’ve seen the ammo painted OD online as well as black with a yellow stripe around the base and I was wondering what was the appropiate color. I’m going to use the decals for the 2nd Armored Div. Normandy 1944. Thanks!
105mm artillery rounds come in a couple different colors depending on what they are/do. As you can see in the below pics, the most common are OD green for HE (High Explosive) and HEAT (High Explosive Anti Tank), and grey for smoke rounds. The casings are always brass. The fuse (on the pointy end) is usually silver.
I’m sure some of the Redlegs here can be more helpful, but the projectile portion of the shell will vary in color, according to type, as will any bands or stencils. The cardboard tubes that the rounds are shipped in are an off black cardboard with black metal end pieces. The seperate powder casing is metallic.
Thanks for the responses! One more question: is the ammo stored in the cardboard tubes within the storage racks or unpacked?
In the above pic, they are stored in the black paper “tootsi roll” shipping cases.
