what kind of info are you looking for? I just got some pics from a Sherman expert of the M4A1 76 with T49 tracks. I can also fish some stuff out of my Sherman book.
there nickname was Ronsons
HI Spitfiresrock,
You will find that this forum is a very valuable source of detailed information. Just about every member will bend over backwards to help you with your search. However, what I try to do is be as specific as possible with my queries. I noticed you have asked a few questions over the last while and I would like to help you find the answers as easily as possible. Many of the members of this forum know more about Sherman tanks than the people who originally designed or built or fought in them. Hence, a general question like yours is not specific enough. You could get the same information from doing a google search on the internet. I have watched your questions get more and more specific over the last few posted questions and you are on the right track. (no pun intended). What I would suggest is that you do a google search and try to get as much information as you can yourself re: your questions and then when you do finally ask a question on the forum it will be much more specific and you will show those you ask that you have already done some of the work and need help from an expert. It just so happens that your question topic is very general and very broad and difficult to answer short of a book. It is similar to asking “I need to know about cars” and then “I need to know about american cars” and then “I need to know about Ford American cars”. All these topics are so broad they are difficult to answer on this forum without writing a book. I noticed Captain Caveman answered your question here the same way he answered it in an earlier post. His answer is pretty funny and I know it was not intended in any other manner than as a winner raprochment. However, his answer does point out the difficulty in answering a very generic question. Once I enquired about a particular german tank from a particular german division in a particular place at a particular time and I received a typed 1 1/2 page answer.
I hope this helps you get information that will be more useful to you down the road. For now, do a google search for the item you are looking for. Then explore some of the headings that come up. Do as much work as you can yourself and then ask a question in the forums which shows you have already done your homework and are not just trying to get someone else to do all your work for you. Please don’t take this as a complaint and no hard feelings. I am trying to help you get the information you need to work on your project.[:D][:D][:D]
i havnt seen any photos of wartime M4A1s with HVSS tracks, ive seen a photo Jason had on the LEM with HVSS tracks but i still think its a M4A3E8 with sandbags
i know the israelis used them after the war with HVSS tracks but what timeframe are you looking at
i’m sorry for the silly answers (ive just wached monty Python life of Brian)
Didnt you have another thread about this exact tank? I replied to that one.
that one was the M4A2 (76)W HVSS Sherman
not this M4A1 (76)W HVSS Sherman post
spitfiresrock,
I can give you a bit of general information. The M-4-A1 76W HVSS (E-8 “easy eight”) was a late war product. Some indication that some were sent to Europe, but no photographic evidence of any seeing combat.
The HVSS suspension is the later type suspension with 2 sets of roadwheels per bogie. I believe also that the 76 MM guns had muzzle brakes.

THe sand bags kind of give the pic Jon was referring to the rounded look of the M4A1 hull, but it is almost impossible to tell for sure. You are probably right- most likely a M4A3E8
When I was stationed in Germany, we had an M4A1E8 in front of our company area. No telling if the vehicle actually served with the unit in WW2 or if it was saved by a range officer from use as a hard target at one of the training areas.
A movie that has some great footage of M4A1E8 tanks is the old sci-fi movie “War of the Worlds” (not the new Tom Cruise remake). They have footage of those vehicles surrounding and fighting the Martian invaders. Most likely either California National Guard vehicles or perhaps tanks from the old Fort Ord in CA.
All I could find was that Pressed Steel Car Co. built almost 3400 M4A1 76 (wet) from 01-44 to 06-45 but kept no records on how many had the VVSS and how many had the HVSS. Ones after August 44 could have had either.
It was called the M4A1E8. It was a production model to some degree, but it’s “wartime” duties are unconfirmed. According to Steve Zaloga, some made it to Europe before war’s end, but there aren’t any known photos of them “in action”.
MMiR #24 had an article where a guy kitbashed one of these from an Italeri M4A1 upper hull and a DML M4A3E8 lower hull, suspension, track, and later T-23 turret.
Then there’s always the “Sherman bible” , the book by R.P Hunnicutt that now sells for $300 at times. It has photos of this creature in it.
