M278 Mule

Been working hard at clearing off my workbench and finished Dragon’s M278 Mule. Built OOB, but added lots of stowage. Modified the driver figure with a new head from Velinden’s Vietnam figure set. The standing figure is from that set as well. Weathered with pastels to try and show the red dirt from the North Highlands area. Straps are made from lead foil. Shell casings on floor from brass wire.

very cool! I love the figs, the vietnam figs are some of the best looking out there!

036HIR,Having a close relationship for those cool 4 wheelers for 4yrs, You’ve absolutlely nailed it.I did 1 abought a year ago,I gotta say yours whoops mine. Encore, rudedog

Looks great, nice job. Is it the angle of the first photograph or does the right front tire look like it floats above the other three (the one over the gun tube)? The crewmen look good too.

It looks like the rf got knocked out of alignment from the lf in this pic . The rf looked ok in the other photo’s . Ive built this kit also and i agree that yours is far superior to mine .

I like what you did here, quite nice. Both guys are turned in the same direction drawing hte viewer in. I like that you used a more animated head than Dragon’s. I was just examining that Verlinden set in my stash last night. Nice job on the card and the cigarette pack in the helmet.

Couple things.

The eyes (always horribly tough to get right) look a little off set from each other. Something I just learned learned from my mentors is that you can see eye alignment better if you look at the face in a mirror. I don’t know why, but it works. Kind of like when the barber stands behind you to cut you hair while watching you in the mirror.

Your flesh looks a bit pale (maybe it’s the pictures) These guys would have been in the sun a lot and have developed a pretty good tan. Back then, we didn’t know about sunscreen and a dark tan was something to strive for. What are you using for flesh? Most out of bottle flesh colors are way off. I currently use Valejo beige red for a base, with charred flesh added for shadows and beige red mixed with light flesh for the first highlight and straight light flesh for the last highlight. With oils, I used titanium white and burnt sienna in various ratios for shadow to highlight. Back whe Tamiya made brushabel paint, I’d add a little medium brown to their flesh. Back then, I really didn’t highlight all that much.

Looks great!

That is one nicely weathered mule. Good highlands mud color.
I like that anti-establishment looking driver [(-D]!!

ajlafleche, thanks for the info. Now that I look at the pics, they do look at little pale. I used Polly S Earth Brown lightened with white. I didn’t think of constant sun exposure, I’ll keep that in mind. As for the eyes, that’s a good tip. You’re right it makes quite a difference looking at them in a mirror.

BTW, I checked that right front tire, and it’s off the ground two sheets of paper worth! Dang you people have good eyes! I need a magnifier just to do basic assembly, hahahaha!
