M242 25 mm Chain Gun - Naval mount

Hello all,

I’m new here and looking for a hand in research. I’m building a model Coast Guard patrol boat and want to scratch build the main gun. Does anyone know how I might find detailed profile drawings that I could scale from? I’ve done some work from pictures, but am not very confident in the results.

Any help would be appreciated.

I’d try a google image search. I have found scale drawings of several naval guns that way. Try first just entering the gun designation. If you are too overwhelmed with images, then include the term drawing in the search terms.

What scale? Always state the scale.

The US naval mount for the 25mm chain gun is designated the MK38 Mod _. The army designation is M242. You may want to change the search parameters to ‘MK38 25mm chain gun’. Not to be confused with the MK38 5-inch gun of WW2 vintage

Veteran Models offers MK38 Chain Guns in 1:350 scale. Try Shapeways for other-scale offerings

This will be in 1/24 scale to match a fiberglass hull offered by Coast Guard models. I’m feeling like I’ll almost certainly have to scratch build the thing. While I’ve found a lot of good pictures, I haven’t found an elevation type drawing which is what I’m really after. Seems like it’s got to exist somewhere, but maybe I’m wrong.

Most computer graphics programs (photo editing programs, CAD, etc) make re-scaling a drawing pretty easy. I don’t worry about the scale of a drawing I find- I can always print it to the scale I need unless the object is so big it ends up bigger than 8 x 11. Even in that case I can tape together sheets.

My Friend ;

Get all the info on the unit and everything concerning it Before trying to build it . I built some CIWS for a client in 1/96 scale and that was a bear ! T.B.

I guess that’s the goal. Where do you get the information from? I’ve looked for anything resembling blueprints and can’t find it. I’m sure some of it is controlled, but the mount itself should not be. Then I come across this:

http://www.turbosquid.com/3d-models/m242-mk38-bushmaster-c4d/586975

And it seems whoever designed this must have either a decent set of blueprints or is very good at gathering the info from other sources, as it looks very ‘to scale’ to me. I’m unsure if I would be able to pull dimensions from a virtual model like that or not, but if so it would get me everything I need.

Well;

If you want , I would go to the Nauticus Website .They might have closeups of my guns .Btw The client did provide drawings and photos .I don’t know where he got them .he was a retired Naval officer too . T.B.
