M1A1 Engine Compartment Detail kits!?!?!?!??

Hiya everybody,

I’m searching for any and all information on where I might find an engine compartment detail set for the M1A1 Abrams Tank. I can’t find anything about this kit to save my life!! I think Verlinden once made one…but they dont sell it anymore. I’ve been able to find a Turret detail kit for the M1A1 and multitudes of photo-etched parts for more detail…but no engine compartments.I’m at my wits end and any kind of link, web addy or information that would lead me to this detail kit would be greatly appreaciated. Thanks for your help!

Jesse, I don’t know if anyone makes a kit for the engine compartment of an M1 series, but in the October 2002 issue of FSM Christie Griffin shows off the one that he/she scratch built. That may be your only route. I checked AEF Designs, but they don’t make one yet. Sorry I couldn’t be more help.

Legends makes one currently in production, Kirin did make one geared towards the DML M1A1/A2.

Good luck in your search for detail set for the M1 tank. Keep us posted on your progress.

1st off I’d like to thank Major Gronovius. Thankyou, sir! Legend Productions does produce and sell the M1A1 Tank Engine Set, part# LF1028. Unit price $45. I have scoured the web for days looking for this kit or any kit for that matter. And I am completely under the impression that this is the one and only engine detail kit for the 1/35 scale M1A1 tank. Thankyou all for helping me out once again…but after looking at this kit and considering the outrageous price I almost feel I could have better results scratchbuilding and customizing the thing myself, and I’ve never even scratchbuilt before! lol. The kit does’nt even allow the engine bay doors to open!?! I mean there’s noway you can get that power pack out with out opening those bay doors. LoL. The back deck plate is missing the long metal spike at the top which is supposed to connect to that big bolt just under the turret. The battery hatches don’t open. And to top it off the powerpack itself looks good at first glance but it’s all wrong, it’s too thin and theres this huge extra tube on it that does’nt even exist on it.
Hehehe… I really hate to sound like i’m bitching about it because i’m not. I’m just letting you guys know for future reference what the kit looks like. Overall I think its generally a nice attempt at an engine kit but I was just expecting a whole lot more. I’ve read about the discontinued Kirin kit and I feel that it sounds like it was a better kit than this one. I’m now focusing on trying to locate one of these Kirin kits… If any of you might know of someone with one, by all means let me know. Thanks once again. Happy Modeling!

Hi oracle9000. I’ve read some of the reviews on the available M1 engine kits in the market, there are I think two if I’m not mistaken, & the Legend kit is the one that got a good review. You said that you found one that cost $45, try searching more on-line hobby shops you might just be surprised.[:D]

There was also one produced by HobbyFan, don’t know if it is the same as the Legends kit. The Kirin kit is not very good either because it only contained the rear Module and not the front Module. I have it and have been scratch building all the missing parts. I even cut out the doors to scratch build the interior details when they are open.I still have not finished this project[sigh].

Kirin went bust and Hobby fan had alot of there moulds so the Hobbyfan one might be the old Kirin one

Mark’s right about the Kirin engine only containing the forward mod. It is also designed to be displayed inside the DML kits and not out of the vehicle. DML molded their back deck was incorrectly. If you look at the photo of the Kirin engine box, the two left side grills are part of the engine cover and would be removed with the back deck.

At $14.95 minus a 20% club discount, I feel I got my money’s worth.
