I had the same question. Most of the reviews I have read on OIF or ODS US armour in the Gulf most people use Tamiya Buff on the Abrams, Humvee’s, M2A2, and this seems to look pretty good.
I have used Buff and it does look the right colour after being weathered. For the 3 tone you can use the Tamiya Nato black, green and brown. If you are like me I don’t like Acrylics too much, I just find it is harder to cover and that MM enamels are so easy to thin and paint with and not much over spray on camo. I use the following:
MM Paints:
- B52 Dark Green or Italian Olive Green
- Italian Brown
- Aircraft Cockpit Black
My question is what are people using for OIF desert, the US Army/Marines Sand looks way too dark, and what are people using for British OIF, Gulf War Sand?
For modern Sand, Testor MM Sand, FS # 33531, Testors # 1706 is an exact match for CARC Sand used by the US Military.
For 3-tone NATO camo, the best colors are the actual ones used. These are all available from Testors MM; Medium Green, FS#34102; Military Brown, FS#30117; and Flat Black, FS# 37038. I like to substitute Field Drab, FS#30118, for the brown since it is a more muted color. The Military Brown is too bright for a vehicle that has been in service for a while. The original colors fade quickly and it looks better to me, and matches vehicles I have served on. You can see examples of these colors in my Showcases below.
Sorry, but no leads on the British Sand color. I am looking for a good MM color or mix as well since I have the Chally 2 in the to-do pile. Anyone have the color/s?
