I am putting together a Tamiya Ford Mutt and would like to know if any of you ol Army guys know if the Army painted any of these Ford’s just Olive Drab and not a camo. I have never done a camo paint before I tried to paint this model in camo and was not pleased with the results so I would just like to paint it a single color Olive Drab. I want to be realistic to a degree.
I know I have seen pics of the Berlin Brigade as well as photos from Korea and Vietnam with mutt’s painted olive. I am not sure what model of the Mutt they were but without realy knowing if there are any physical differences between the A1 and A2 I am not sure if you could realy tell the difference between the two.
I remember at JRTC, when it was still at Ft. Chaffee so must’ve been about 1990 or 91, they were still using the a2’s for OC vehicles. My unit was part of the OPFOR augment program, and we were tooling around the Arkansas back woods in old M151a2 Mutts. Probably among their last uses in service (they were camo by then, of course).
Into the 1990s, there were M151s running around Ft. Hood (I think the TX NG’s 49th Armor Division) that were painted the standard CARC green (base color of the Abrams, Bradley, etc.).
The Berlin Bde’s trucks were the same shade of green and were still in use into the late 80s.
