hey dj,
me again![:)]
just saw your wingy-thing[:p] walkaround link…
quick question: was the achilles a british version of the m10 (i’m a bit sketchy here) in the same vein as the firefly/sherman relationship??
if so i might get one of them…
regards
nick

Honestly, Nick, I’m not 100% sure. Different gun for sure. This site gives some info, but better wait for Shermanfreak to answer that one…!

Excellent set of pics Domi !!!

Nick - The Achilles was a British conversion of the M10. They added a 17 pounder (same gun as in the Firefly) and rearranged to storage on the interior a bit.

Nice ref pics. Thanks, DJ.

Thanks DJ. I have a few pics for my achilles, but these help round out a lot of questions.

Love the second one of turret ‘converted to a planter pot’!

Nick.
The Brits started off with the basic M10, but wanted more knock out power. They fitted a 17 pounder gun (same as the firefly but with a counterweight slightly behind the muzzle brake) in place of the M10’s main gun. They also changed the turret wall stowage to suit their needs (ie, 2 sten guns fitted to racks on each side and magazine stowage to the rear. Cable reel, etc). They also replaced the hull round stowage racks as the M10 used rounds held in canister tubes but the 17 pounder ammo was racked without outside protection. The rounds were alternated nose to tail to fit in the smaller space.

The Brits also changed the external pioneer tool layout and added fire extinquishers to the upper rear hull. Otherwise, it was generally the same as the M10

silly americans, why didn’t we think of that-more firepower in a tank, sheesh, we were outdone(ok, well we always were-a sherm vs. a maus/e-100 who would win?
