Hey Guys,
While reading this topic, I glanced up at my book shelves in front of me , and there is a book you might be interested in.
It’s called - Luftwaffe Test Pilot – [ flying captured allied aircraft of world war 2 ]
it’s by Hans-Werner Lerche.
published by Janes 1980
ISBN 0 7106 0031 3
I just got a book recently about the unit that test flew both the German jets and the captured US fighters. Lots more photos in there. I’ll try to find the title when I get home.
There ARE aftermarker decal sheets for those planes, btw. I’ve got one for the Jug and for the P-51B. It’s on my list of things to do.
Thanks Pingtang, Karl, Shannonman and John P for the information about the captured allied planes. Now I won’t be able to sleep for some time, having this image of a P-47 adorned with German markings on my mind. The horror, the horror![:O]
I would like to see a picture of the finished German P-47, John P, it should be interesting. It’s just a good thing the Germans didn’t have more of these when it mattered…[oops]
I’ve seen photos of P-47s, P-38s, B-24s, and B-17s in Luftwaffe colors, some of them are in the Squadron Signal’s series. They would rebuild crashed Allied aircraft and use them as training aids for their pilots.
ive read somewhere there was a whole squadron of captured allied planes that toured the axis countries to familiarize pilots with there looks and capabilities ive also read of captured bombers (b-17s b-24s etc) being used to attempt to lure allied formations off course or into traps. Very sneaky those nazis ( like we wouldnt or didnt try the same thing right? LOL)
You probably have seen this site of profiles, but if not it is interesting. You can choose a plane and then there are various schemes. Many include captured versions. website is http://wp.scn.ru
Here are a couple of the p-47 in German colors.
Personally, I would really like to do the 3rd one some day.
