Hi I am getting ready to airbrush the upper surface camo (mottling) on my FW-190. I have my model painted the base color. Now I need to airbrush the upper surfaces. I was just wondering if anyone had any advice on painting the top of the fuselage.
I was planning to loosly mask the sides of the fuselage to get the faded effect. I am not worried about the wings or tail. I will be using my crescendo 175T and Model Master enamels.
Any advice would be appreciated. I have painted a few mottled schemes before, (and they turned out nice, hehe) but it has been so long, I feel like Ive forgotten how to do it.
That is a nice airbrush you got there… just like mine [:D] There was an article in FSM about doing a mottled camo scheme. The person who built it used receipe cards with a rough cutout in it for a mask and just moved it around to make diffrent sizes. It turned out looking pretty nice, and seemed like it would be a lot easier than using all that tape. I think it was the October 2005 issue. Good luck and post some pics when you get her done!
Thanks for the feedback. I sometimes look at some of my other german planes and wonder “how did I do that”. Its just been a while since ive done one in this scheme.
I plan on using the fine tip, and like you mentioned a piece of heavy paper as a mask.
let us know how the fine tip with modeling paint works out… I have the 175 as my brush for larger things, and my Iwata handles everything else… I was wondering if the 175 with the fine needle/nozzle might even be able to freehand the 1/72 mottling!
My Iwata HP-CR with the .5mm tip and needle do it decently but I can see it would be better with one of the smaller diameter combos… I was thinking of taking the 175 and trying it (even though I plan to get a new airbrush soon for the smaller stuff)
Well the results are in. I have a nice two tone grey FW-190. The paintscheme is definetly not the mottling I was looking for. Doh!
I will post pics of the plane when it is done in the aircraft forum.
As for the 175 fine tip. For me I was unable to pull off the look I was going for. Im sure someone could pull it off, but I couldnt, hehe.
Ive used the fine tip to do 1/48 aircraft mottling and free hand camo and it always worked out well. The 1/72 aircraft was just way too tiny. Which makes me wonder…how did I pull it off on my last 1/72 FW-190, lol.
