Looking for Zinc chromate yellow...

Hey guys,

Just a question now that it is coming up in my mind… I have been modeling on a more serious scale for a few years now and it is time for me to stop cutting corners…

Usually when i build american stuff i have gotten away with using interior green any time zinc chromate yellow was called for. My colors of choice for this are revell’s number 360 (fern green) or humbrol acrylic 226 (darker shade)

My question is to find a ready made zinc chromate yellow or the recipe to mix my own…

I can get ahold of revell, humbrol, tamyia, vallejo and model master pretty easily in my corner of the world… Is there anything in their arsenal that is passable? Other brands are available but slightly harder to come by…

Richard

Richard, all I can tell you is Tamiya XF-4 zinc chromate yellow and gunze H-58 interior green. Both are accurate straight from the bottle. Model Master has interior green which also looks about right. As far as which cockpit was painted what, thats another thread…by the way hows the Mig 3 coming along? Been debating on picking up their yak 9 kit and loading it up with aftermarket.

there are a few ideas here, down the list from your topic

almost all of the major paint ranges have someone supporting their colors, it seems,which is cool

Testors makes a zinc chromate yellow as part of its regular enamel colors in the square bottles (not Model Master).

I believe I’ve also seen zinc chromate yellow in the Acryl line of Model Master paints. Odd that it is not in the enamel line up as well.

yes, it is MM Acryl # 4851

I think that Yellow got skipped when MM started up,because it was already #1184, and back then, there were 5 to 10 colors that didn’t get rebottled from the 1/4 oz line to the 1/2 oz, Yellow Chromate, Rubber, a Flesh,and some others

Guys,

Thanks a bunch. Looks like the MM paint is my best bet. My LHS has a stock of MM paints tucked away in the back. Haven’t really bothered looking into them yet but i certainly will next visit.

@Nathan,

The Mig is still on the bench! I am just trying to figure out the decals. I have the stars but no numbers. I might just end up cutting the numbers from white decal paper.

Richard

Well… had a chance to stop by my LHS after work today…no MM #4851… [bnghead]

So i went home with plan B in my mind: mix up my own zinc chromate yellow using yellow and green. Going through my paint stock it kinda hit me… I have the MM #4796E “pz. dunkelgelb 1943”, which was almost the color i needed. Mixed that up with some yellow and i must say i am pleased with the result:

Thank you all again for your advice guys. I do appreciate the input.

TLAR…

FWIW to ya, I use the following for US and US-built aircraft:

Testor’s Yellow Zinc Chromate (# 1184CA Zinc Chromate) enamel (1/4 oz.)

Testor’s MM Green Zinc Chromate (#1734) Enamel (1/2 oz.)

Polly Scale US Interior Green A/N 611 (FS 505096) Acrylic (1/2 oz.)

thanks hans. if it comes up and i want to experiment i can use the search engine and find this thread back[y]

But umm… sorry for being the stupid european here but… TLAR…?..FWIW…? those are new to me[:$]

Richard

Richard,

If you haven’t seen it you might check IPMS Stockholm’s Colour Chart with paint brand cross-refences.

They also have a nice discussion of USAAF interior paint and zinc chromate.

I have both book-marked at home.

Sorry…

TLAR= That Looks About Right: My method for deciding if something is accurate or not, using my calibrated Mk I Eyeball… lol…

FWIW= For What It’s Worth…

Ok Hans, thanks for filling me in[;)]
