Almost done academy 1/35 tiger 1 (early version) in afrika corp outfit. Looks good (thou I can’t post any photos, my camera is broken) but I can’t find any link tracks, the kits tracks where too stiff an hard and refused to do a sag effect. But I can’t find any track set for it at any of my local HS (the closest I could find was for 1/48), I may have to buy it online.
I got some from E-Bay cost me about $15 for the late Tiger 1 made by AFV item ref AF35093 they claim to be workable but not tried them yet so cant confirm that. Sure they will make the early ones but you could try HobbyBoss, used some of theirs for the King Tiger and they look good but are not easy to work with. At the end of the day sure Fruil will make some but they will cost you
Cheapest is Academy’s own indy link Tiger tracks (#1364). These are “glue together”, not great, but acceptable and they’re not workable, but they’re dirt cheap and you will get change from $10.00
Then you have the aforementioned workable AFV Club tracks (#35094)
Then you get to the more expensive ($30.00+)options like MK and Friul - not sure if you want to go that far for this kit.
Tamiya also makes an aftermarket set of individual track links, not sure if they would be appropriate for the time period of your Tiger though. They have both indy links for the “late” and “mid” I think.
I have had good luck with model master. I bought mine off of ebay for I think $30 or so. They had great detail and went togehter well. I made a mistake and used the wrong CA. Thought it was thick and it ran into the joints. I used them on my Brandenberg tiger.
There are other ways to simulate track sag without buying replacement tracks. I’ve seen tracks glued onto idler wheels and even fine thread being run between the top and bottom runs to pull down the top run.
yrs ago i took twist tie wire, heated it then stuck it in the hull side between the return rollers to look like sag. didn’t look half bad and the wire wasn’t at all noticable, but ya can’t beat decent workables for sag
A while ago i posted a tutorial on how to do Modelkasten Tiger I early tracks … or on how I/forums/710656/ShowPost.aspx do MK Tiger I early tracks .
MK’s have become my prefered choice, thaht doesn’t mean it is the right choice for everyone, they require quite a bit of work and care and they are fragile no matter how you look at it, but they look great. Ofcourse if you don’t want to spent alot of money on tracks you will have to find another way.
Wow thanks, that will be really useful. I love link track ever since Dragon’s T-34, since they make a realistic sag effect. My last tank with link tracks was dragon’s SU-85, worked great with its urban dio.
Found some more link tracks for 1/35 tanks but panzer IV is too small, and panther are close, but not close enough.
Tracks are not interchangeable. Specific tracked vehicles all have differing track styles and sizes, etc., unless they are built on a common chassis. They’re no more interchangable than turrets or guns.
