Looking for an honest critique...

First of all, a little backstory:

I have had a diorama scene stuck in my head for a few weeks now, but it’s on hold until the current dio is finished (which could be a while still) but…while working out the details, I decided that I needed some sort of command car. The first thing to pop into my head was the quintessential favorite, the Kubelwagen, the ol’ bucket…I thought of others, Steyrs and such, but I kept going back to the idea of using the Kubel.

Only problem was, my LHS didn’t have one (I really don’t have a LHS, just a Hobby Lobby, and they’re pretty limited). I scouted eBay and every other internet site I could find in search of a cheap kit (it’s going to be crashed and half-covered in the dio, so I figured, why go all-out?) but I kept running into the same thing…shipping, shipping, shipping. I got irritated at the idea of having to pay a premium just because I live in a place with crap for hobby shops. Finally, in a fit of pique, I said, “I oughta just scratchbuild the &$*@# thing!”

Several moments passed before I realized that I was serious, I really meant it, I wanted to try my hand at scratching a Kubel.

Okay, I thought, it’s boxy, it’s blocky, no compound curves…and I had a road wheel and a spare wheel in the parts box from a Kubel I built back in the '80s, so I had a pattern for the tires…I began to think that it could work.

The actual production is a longer story, and even more boring (I might do a write-up of it, if anyone cares, but that’s not for this thread).

In the end, I arrived at something that I think looks quite a lot like a Kubelwagen. Some of the dimensions are off, and some of the work is a tad bit rough, but I think it’s perfectly serviceable.

So…what does everyone else think? Honest, now…cut me no slack

Your thoughts are appreciated!

Looks great to me. At first impression I would say that was a kit.

hey, that is an excellent job! kudos!

It looks like a Kubel. And that’s good enough for me. I know it’s not easy scratchbuilding one so give yourself a pat on the back.

Great job!! It looks perfect!! I could not tell it was a scratch.[:)]

Wow… THAT is awesome! When I first saw it I thought … ‘Ooooh. I should build a kubelwagon. I wonder what kit he used’.

Nice work!

Sweet job I wouldve thought it was a kit too.

OK. You fooled me. I looked at the pic first and thought it was a kit. Great job!!

very, very nice build drucifer. excellent job yer right, some of the work is a bite rough, but its still very well done i commend you two [tup][tup] up

That’s a very good job you did, and I know I couldn’t do better. Since you asked for honest, the most obvious thing missing is the canopy and the front bar over the license plate. Don’t get me wrong, that is a great attempt.

Wow…so many replies already!!

Thanks, everyone, for the feedback! I expected to see nothing at all here when I came back to the screen…

So many people saying they thought it was a kit makes me feel great about it…wow…I can retire

And Tigerman, thanks for the heads-up on those two items! The canopy is going to be added later–I’ve built a frame for it, but in the final dio I intend to have it a bit crumpled as the Kubel is intended to be crashed

And on the bar…I’ve seen examples of two different setups. The 1/18 replica that I used as my primary reference has two hooks, while several photos I’ve seen have a bar. I was trying to decide which way to go, and while I was deciding, I completely forgot to do anything at all with the front!! So thanks for the reminder!

Thanks again everyone for the replies!

I’m with everyone else, nice job! So ,are you still gonna wreck it?

My 1/35 has the 2 hooks.

I am primarily a wingy thingy person, but that Kubel looks great. It is certainly better than anything I could do from scratch. Congrats

Gosh[:O] It’s a shame you’re going to wreck such a nice piece of scratch building! That would be my pride, and joy if I had the talent too even attempt it. Outstanding job. Thanks for allowing us a chance too see it before you wreck it. Semper Fi, mike

I agree with yw18mc if I could build as well as that I wouldnt wreck it. God job and let us see pics of the dio when it is done.

It’s going to be hard to wreck that li’l sucker…after what went into it…but that’s what I built it for.

I’m not really planning on destroying it…it’s only going to be slightly crumpled and a little dented, and sort of half-buried…

We’ll see when the time comes if it’s as easy to do it as it is to talk about it [:-^]

Thanks again for all the feedback!
