Lockheed Electra 10

Here’s my completed build of the Special Hobby 1/72 Kit of the Lockheed Electra 10, which is full of inaccuracies, but I don’t care.

The giant inaccuracy here is the presence of all those windows down both sides. The kit comes with livery for Amelia Earhart’s Electra (which has just a couple of windows on each side) plus Romanian Air Force and Spanish Air Force models, both of which have all the windows. As well as asking me to scratch build the antennas from heated sprue (no thanks) it also suggested that if I wanted Amelia’s plane I’d have to putty up and sand smooth all the unwanted windows (no thanks – I’m a modelling/puttying newbie, and there’s no way I’d ever make that look good).

All I wanted was a shiny, pretty Electra, and now I have one. Of course I could add the antennas, but once I decided to be very inaccurate, I decided on as streamlined a look as possible was best.

I’ve stuck on the Amelia decals

And the kit itself lacked much in the way of holes to slot things into, so I found that for this build it was easiest to use thin Super Glue, something I haven’t used much before. It all went well, I didn’t stick my fingers together, and I think I’ll make use of the Super Glue (here and there) more often from now on.

Good job Ozmac, I think it looks very good.

I use CA almost exclusively, both thick and thin, except for clear plastic. Don’t worry about the inaccuracies, if you like it, that’s all that matters.

That’s a build you should be proud to display.

What is the finish? Aluminum paint?

Yes, just good old Tamiya Gloss Aluminium

Nothin’ wrong with that!

Hey !

I dunno , it looks okay to me . A little tall on the landing gear , but Who cares ? You obviously had fun building her and that is what counts , or should , in every build , Right ?

Newbie or not , you are on the right path .Good job , I always liked those planes ! Tanker - Builder

I forgot something .

Did you know that many of these were used by fledgling airlines too ? Imagine one in Capitol Airlines Livery for instance . Red stripes , bordered by white and polished fuselage , wings , and engine Nacelles . WoW ! T.B.

I think there were more airlines using them than businesses. And, speaking of that sort of plane, I see by the latest FSM that ICM is coming out with a Twin Beech, a plane frequently confused with the Electra. Anyone know when that ICM kit (a 1:48 kit!) will be available, and what the price is? I intend to build it as a civil version, since the C-45 was basically identical to the D-18
