My last couple of builds I’ve been using Krylon Flat to seal in everything. It works fairly well but leaves a sheen so its not a ‘dead flat’ formula. I was kicking around the idea of using the Liquitex varnishes since they seem about the equivalent to the MM Acryl/ Vallejo varnishes in terms of look and consistency but the Liquitex is more cost efficient to use.
I was wondering if anybody has used those Liquitex varnishes on their builds and if they’d recommend it?
I started using Liquitex Matte varnish a little while ago. It only took one model for me to be sold on it. It can be airbrushed straight from the bottle and gives almost instant results with light application. On the down side, it’s not as good as a protection as other finishes. You can scratch it with pressure from your fingernail.
After using the matte varnish for a couple models, I decided to branch out and try satin and high gloss. The satin worked out just like the matte varnish, it went on smoothly and gave great results. However, I haven’t figured out how to get the high gloss to work in my favor. It tends to puddle up on itself, even when airbrushed.
I haven’t tried the regular gloss yet, but I think the matte and satin varnishes are excellent.
I find that the Testors dullcoat puts on the most flat/diffuse finish on anything I try. I get several models from one can of dullcoat and considering the price of the kits these days I certainly don’t worry about the cost of the dullcoat.
