liquitex medium gel

hi all

is it possible to mix acrylic white paint to liquitex medium gel?

many thx

Sure is.

I’ve used Liquitex with acrylic modeling paint, artists tube acrylic paint, and acrylic craft (squeeze bottle) paint with success.

Heres the lowdown on Liquitex ACRYLIC medium gel’s.the product comes in 2 formulas plain “gel mediun” and “Gloss Gel medium” what these products are is basically acrylic paint with NO pigments added. they are often used as a thinning agent thinning as in making acrylic paints more Transparent rather than thining it’s viscosity.they are often used as varnishes for paper mache’ and collage works, the medium can be used successfully with ALMOST all acrylics I have Rarely had problems with compatibility. It’s great stuff to use for water with waterline model ships I hope this helps you out

PS as a Commercial artist I have used the stuff for almost 20 years with great results

thx for replys lads

i want to use it on a waterline model for the white surf look along the sides do you think this will be ok?

many thx again

mick

Yes, I commonly use the Liquitex mediums for exactly that purpose. You can sculpt a wave base using the Liquitex Gel - which is a thick pudding-like consistency. It builds waves and can be tinted with the artists’s tube paints. You may paint over top of it when it dries if you want to save some $ on paint. Hint – use a dark color such as Paynes Gray to make the water depth. The acrylic gel will shrink some as it dries.

Then use the Liquitex Gloss Medium to make washes of color to help whuild depth. Select colors which are appropriate for your choice of ocean. This also cements the ship to the base. Make some of your washes with white and flow them in as the boundary and stern wake. Add one or two color washes to tone down the deep white.

Add a final coat of Future floor polish to make everthing wet looking. Its okay to splash some on the side of the ship’s hull. Ship’s don’t stay dry. When that’s dry go back & pick out some wave & wake tops with pure white paint.

Rusty Whites article on SteelNavy goes into much of this method. He uses Sculpey as his water base instead of the gel medium.
