Been doing research for a new build and will need to use a liquid mask on top of Tamiya and AK Real Colors acrylics. Looks like many liquid masks have ammonia. Trying to find one that is safe to use in large quantities on these types of paints. Master Mask any good, for instance?
Don’t use anything with ammonia in it. It will soften and dissolve acrylic paint.
Right, that’s what I figured. The stuff I have doesn’t even have any ingredients/chemical contents listed…
I use Micromask by Microscale Industries over various, but mostly Vallejo acrylics and have had no problems yet.
Same folk who make Microsol and Microset decal setting solutions.
Nice. Do you find you need either a single thick layer and/or multiple layers? And is it a pretty sharp demarcation? I’m doing an Me 262 with NMF and putty and using the masking liquid to cover panels to let me airbrush the putty along the fuselage.
I have used a single, thick layer and have yet to have a problem. It has a blue color added so you can see where it is and isn’t.
The demarcation is as sharp as you lay it down with a brush. It’s ok but I’ve mostly used it for masking the uncovered areas of Eduard masks on canopies. I very recently used it to mask the wingtip position (nav) lights and that was an application where the edge of the mask was the edge of the paint, and it ended up crisp and clear. You want to use a good brush, not a cheap one.
The product is water soluble, clean-up is a snap and it dries pretty quickly. I like to let it dry overnight but that might be overkill.
I don’t know how comfortable I would be using it on large areas. I’ve only used it with acrylics so far as I can recall.
BTW, I’m not grasping exactly what you are wanting to do but I’ve used post-it notes to mask off panels for painting various NMF tones.

The yellow lines are putty along panel lines. I was thinking of masking off the panels themselves to leave just the putty lines exposed, then airbrushing (after the base NMF is down.) The lines need to be sharp but not straight, and I’ve seen this done elsewhere so figured it’d be a good method.
Isn’t Humbrol Maskol supposed to be safe for Acrylics as well?
yes it is , and a very good product it is to , have used it regularly .

In my experience, if applied too thickly, it will eat through Tamiya acrylics. However, if lightly applied over fully cured paint, it should be ok. Apply sparingly.
The same applies for Gunze’s Mr Masking Sol Neo.
I have been using this. It does contain ammonia but I have not had any issues with it. It is wonderfull stuff and comes off easily.

Your reference photo does help me visualize what you want to do. I would think Micro mask would work ok. It would be tedious putting it on and maybe a bit worse taking it off.
I have never had good luck with that stuff. It for some reason doesn’t seem to want to come off whenever I use it.
I have had good experience with microscale also - just put a thick enough layer so you can get it off easily.
Just curious, has anyone ever used the Abeiltung stuff?
I‘ve only used the Abteilung “modeling oil color” in the tube as a gunk wash. Paint on neat and wipe off as much as you can. Let it dry several days. Great results.
Sorry, just realized this was in regards to masking fluid an not Abteilung products in general.
