how do you go about building link and length tracks? do you paint, assemble, then weather, or what? im trying to find another way to do it, ive been assembling painting then weathering but i allways mess them up
What I would do is assemble the link part like the parts around the drive sprocket and idler wheel first to get the correct bend and then attach the length parts separately. After that you can take the whole track off as one piece paint/weather it and put it back on the vehicle. Just place the idler wheel and drive sprocket at their respective positions on the track and reattach.
Great TUT here:
Man do I hate link and length,I would rather do Magic Tracks any day
The last time i used them,I painted them 1st,then installed them, then touched them up and weathered them on the tank.It was a 1/48 Tamiya JS-2
Yes it is for sure, but it deals with Magic Track Indies, the link and length tracks present a different set of problems

Although they are not the same having longer lengths which is easier IMO, Doogs TUT gives the basics on assembly which you can incorporate and adapt to the assembly of the length tracks.
here’s another tut on the length tracks,
thanks for that one also
No sweat buddy. I know they are a PITA to work with but you get that realistic sag that the rubber band tracks don’t give.
The first TUT was a good one, pretty much what o was looking for,
