A small vignette depicting the Viking raid on the Celtic Monk’s Monastery on the island of Lindisfarne, just off the coast of England. The Vikings killed many of the Monks & other residents & made off with the treasure.

Metal figures, painted with Humbrol enamels & Vallejo acrylics.

Arrrrrrggggggghhhhhhhhhh!!! Evil vikings!!!

Really great job on the flesh tones Rick, I esp like the resigned ‘oh God what did I do to deserve this’ look on the monk’s face. Folds in the monk’s robe and the fur on the viking looks sharp too and I like the simple base- it really sets off the figures well.

Just wondering though are they 28mm, 52mm or what scale? And if I may ask who makes the set (I assume they came together?)

Thanks Gamera. They are 54mm from IR. Very old castings, I think they were released in the mid 80"s.

Thanks Rick, now that you point it out I think I remember seeing them in Squadron’s catalog back in the '80s.

By no means!

The Lindisfarne raid was nothing but a reaction the central EuropeanChristian expansionim - by Charlemagne - where satellite tribes were expected to accept Christianity without complaint. Of course, no one would like some outside force come and tell them what religion to subscribe to, so the Vikings attacked christianity at their weak spots. Their monastries.

Now, as time went by, the norsemen ‘succumbed’ to Christianity anyway, but by then, they had already influenced the main lines of politics in 11th century Northern Europe, and by induction, everything that has happened since:

  • England was counquered by Wilhelm in 1066
  • Wilhelm came out of Normandie, which means ‘the land of the northeners’
  • Erik Raude setteled in America (Lans-aux-Meadows)
  • What came to be known as Russia was established, probably by Swedes, in Novgorod.

So please, don’t blame the Vikings for anything. The only difference between them and European settlers in North America from 1492 onwards, is their weapons.

Hi there, I,ve just come across this item, my compliments on the paint job, for everyone who has responded to this item, just to put the record straight, the figures are to 1:32nd scale and were manufactured by Phoenix Model Developments Ltd. in the UK.

They are from a set of 5, sculpted by Tim Richards for Phoenix and they are now Manufactured by S & D Models (www.sanddmodels.co.uk)
