Let's see or hear about your stash

I won’t post any pictures, because it’s too tough to get good ones that show all of it. I estimate that I have about 350 kits in the stash. I have a couple of problems with it.

One is that I don’t have enough display space to show finished models, if I ever did build all the kits in my stash.

The other is again, space, but storage space. Much of my stash is in a spare bedroom. When I moved into this house, I thought it would be great for friends traveling from longer distances to be able to stay. But the stash takes up much of that space.

And if I don’t or can’t build them, I want them to go to people who will and who will enjoy them.

I’ve been thinking more and more over the past few years about thinning the stash. It’s mostly 1/48 airplanes, classic Monogram kits, but also 1/700 scale ships. I have a couple of totes with Maschinen Krieger kits, too. The 1/48 airplanes will go first, then the ships. I’ll keep the MaK kits until I absolutely can’t build them. They’re 1/20, they build fast, they’re fun to build, and they don’t take up that much display space.

This doesn’t include my gray army of unpainted castings and kits in 54mm. Those I will keep as well. I intend to finish every one of those.

I have my stash stored on an excel spreadsheet in Google docs by title, company scale, product number, then version. I have a notes cell which keeps all my aftermarket and PE info I’ve purchased for that piece in it. This way I can see what I have so not to order doubles.

My next tab on the excel sheet is my paint inventory, separated by company, product number and quantity. I list what I need to replenish here as well.

Third tab is a paint conversion section that I have combined over the years from other sources on the net. It’s pretty intensive as new colours have come out and I’ve been adding matches to it.

My last tab holds my generic PE parts inventory by country or usage, decal inventory and styrene inventory.

Why you may ask, you never know when you need to check your inventory and having it on a smart phone, makes it easier in so many ways.

  1. no internet access or the site holding your stash is down, you still have it on your phone.

  2. people bugging you about playing games or surfing the net, no I’m working in excel. I love this one, people apologize. Lol.

  3. most importantly , when you put your phone in airplane mode to hide your location from the wife, because she’ll freak out as your at another hobby store, you can still use your sheet!

I stopped buying kits. nearing age 70 so I doubt I can even put a dent on 300+ boxed kits. I also ran out of display space so I’m in limbo for now.

I hear this excuse a lot. Darn growing old gets in the way of everything. I’m nearing 60 and I don’t like it.

A happy and healthy 66,but well aware of my age !!!

I’m 6 years behind you Tojo, and I’m feeling it already. I figure if I make it to 75, that’s only 15 more years. It’s not really a lot of time to finish a lot of kits for a guy that is slow as me.

And yet I continue to buy more kits, albeit at a slower rate. And I do ask myself if I can find a spot to store another kit every time I reach for the “Buy This!” button.

I just hope I can still build stuff when I retire! It would be great if I could have my friends over for build days, without regarding the time and worrying about having to go back to work.

Look at the bright side fellas. Lots of folks didn’t make it to our age rather departing very early in life. I for one thank the Lord each day I awake. Another day is a gift of life to enjoy.

There can be only one…

I have a friend whose stash outnumbers all the ones posted here. He is in his early 70s and has 3,000+ kits in his HUGE stash neatly stored on heavy duty industrial type shelves inside a large storage unit in his backyard. He only builds maybe 3-4 kits a year.
