I would really like to use lead foil to make a flag, but the lead foil I have (from a wine bottle) seems to be too difficult to work with. [%-)] It’s really stiff and tends to fold rather than curve or shape. [banghead] Is/are there any tips or techniques for working with lead foil?? Any help or suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks in advance! [:)]
Another option is to download and copy the flag onto white paper. Apply a light amount of thinned white glue to the backside before folding it over. This will soften the paper allowing you to set it nice furls. WHen dry, the glue keeps the flag in the position you chose.
Shape a piece of clay into the shape you want the flag to assume. Use either paper as suggested or tissue. Lay either over the clay and apply the thinned white glue…the flag will dry in the shape of the mold (clay) remove when dry…clean and use.
AJ and Hawkeye,
Thanks for the input, I will try those techniques. What type of clay is the best to use? The modeling clay I have is like Play-doh (by Crayola-probably the wrong type) but it’s meant to be used and re-used, it’s also kinda greasy feeling.
That will work fine…the paper and glue shouldn’t stick to it. If it does it is easily washed away once the piece cures.
where can one get lead foil in the states?
The only place I have found it is from wine bottles. Since I don’t drink, I had some friends of mine who do save a couple from the bottles they’ve opened.
You can also try the local craft shops. I found some at Diamonds when I lived in Florida. The bag contains about a dozen 4"x5" sheets for under $5. I can make TONS of belts, straps, etc. with just a couple of sheets.
Use heavy kitchen foil…safer.
Hello senojrn,
Verlinden Products offers lead sheets. Lead being a soft metal is easily cut and manipulated into different shapes. I’ve used it for belts, straps, and yes a flag.

HTH,

Why do you say that? Because of the lead content or another reason? I’ve tried aluminum foil, but it doesn’t hold the shape I want to make, even when coated with Super Glue. Do you have any tips for using kitchen foil? If you do, I’d really like to get those from you!
Thanks Mobious; appreciate it! [:)]
Try your dentist. The bite-wings used for x-rays come sealed in lead foil pouches. Also a good place to get picks. My dentist has a drawer full of used picks, mine for the asking.
