I went to Silverstone on Saturday for the Le Mans Endurance Series, a short season of qualifiers for the 24 Hours, and a support programme including British GT qualifying and some Classic Le Mans racers.
I managed to get a few decent shots (easier when a car is due to pass you 195 times [:D]) and thought some folks here might like them.
HEY,
Wow those pics are great! I would love to be able to go to one of those races. Isnt that third one the new corvette race car design? Dont think so but it looks oddly familiar. Thanks for the pics man.
It’s actually a classic Porsche 917, but it does look surprisingly modern. I can see the similarity from the front with the GT Corvettes and Saleens.
From the top:
Lister Storm LMP (with glowing discs [:D])
Ferrari Daytona
Porsche 917
Audi R8
TVR T400R (whoosh!)
I guess the closest to Maine (for ALMS at least) would be Lime Rock in CT. Maybe you could fiddle a business trip/holiday to Florida for the Sebring 12hrs [;)]
Seeing the 917 and Daytona would have made my day. The only sportscar race I’ve seen was at Zuhai in China of all places in 1995. It was fantastic so to have ready access to tracks that run such meetings makes me envious.
juniormodeler, if you are really keen on Euro style endurance racing, the American Le Mans Series visits Road Atlanta, Braselton GA, in late September.
By my reckoning, that’s an hour’s drive from you [:D]
Beautiful pictures, U-96, thank you for sharing them!
Pictures 1, 2, & 4 are intriguing because they showcase the Speed Blur affect! The car frozen in time, with the wheels, track, and wall blurred… which is an excellent way of displaying a model, giving it an “In-Motion” affect even though it’s static.
I experimented with this technique last year, using an AMT '71 Monte Carlo.
Oldhooker, those are some of the best of about 400 shots [:o]
I had a digicam with a big card, and deleted dozens that didn’t work. I found some very useful tips on race photography on the net and tried them out. I would hate to try that on chemical film!
That’s a nice effect there with the Monte Carlo. It’s a bit harder at Silverstone because it’s a very safe circuit - spectators are well back from most of the track or there’s wire in the way, so getting a clear panned shot that shows lots of movement is difficult unless you’ve got a media pass [:(]
Here’s a better one of Davies/Herbert’s 88 Audi R8: it’s 1280x1024 so big enough for a desktop if folks feel so inclined [:)]
