Late 80’s mail order

When I was younger my Mom had signed me up for some monthly kit subscriptio. If I remember correctly I would get a new kit every month in a plan cardboard box. I was wondering if anyone remebers or knows who made the kits. I would like to find a couple of the old kits.

Thanks!

I remember! I was in this “club” too! One kit that stands out in my mind was the ‘XF-16’, a delta wing F-16 fighter. I think it was about 1/72 scale (although, admittedly, I was a preteen and didn’t pay attention to such unimportant things!). I cant remember what the manufacturer was of that model club…

I was in the Revell Master Modelers club in the 70s. They would send a model a month if I recall. Pretty fun.

Both Monogram and Revell–then still separate entities–had such schemes at one point. Revell’s was the ‘Master Modelers Club’…and I think Monogram’s was something like the ‘Young Builders’ club. Both were pretty widely advertised, both in magazines and comics, and with inserts in kit boxes.

BTW, the ‘club’ boxings of the various kits can regularly be found on E-bay…though at prices rather higher than their '80s ‘sticker price!’

YOUNG BUILDERS CLUB! THAT WAS IT! A flood of memories just came back! thank you!

Always a relief when one of those lights goes on! [:D]

If I’m not mistaken, the first such subscription ‘builders club’ was actually started by Readers Digest magazine in the early '60s. It featured kits from a number of manufacturers including (don’t quote me on this) Monogram, Revell, Aurora, Lindberg…and maybe Hawk.

I picked up an old weird-scale (1/156?) Aurora 747 in club boxing on E-bay a few years back for next to nothing, since it was missing a few gear doors. It’s molded in bright flourescent orange. It’s a fair amount of plastic for what were then largely considered ‘entry level’ kits!

That was it!! Thanks, I figured someone would know!

### Me too.### I remember that… '75 - '76

Me too they sent me many a luner lander … wish i have them now

The delta wing, technically a cranked delta wing, F-16 was the F-16XL. Monopgram had a 1/72 kit of it. Two prototypes were built and lost out to the F-15E.

That sounds like the one that my folks had me in during the early to mid 70s. I don’t recall many of the kits, but two that come to mind are the Tom Daniel’s Red Baron Kit with the hot rod & little Fokker, and the Aurora 1/48 A-7.

I had my Monogram 48th P-39 still in the brown box up til a few years ago. For the life of me I don’t know what happen to it

I was a member of the Monogram club. Some of the models I remember building were a smaller scaled Mustang Shelby that was cream colored with blue racing stripes and a silver 2-engined B-25 bomber with gun packs on the forward sides of the fuselage.

There was also a ship I wish I could recall. USN vessel of some make.
