Lancaster info required.

I’m building a model of Flt Lt H “Mickey” Martins Lancaster of Operation Chastise, AJ-P, and need to find out the following:-

  1. Where were the spotlights fitted, what size were they and at what angle were they fitted?
  2. What was the shape of the J did it have a round bottom as in this font or did it have the flattened bottom as on AJ-G?
  3. In the book Dam Busters the spot lights were brought to a figure 8 on the water but in other sources it says the joined to an O. Which is correct?
It is my intention to mount the aircraft using yellow or clear acrilic rod to indicate the beams of light. If they meet in an O then I will change the name from “The Run In” to “Down a Bit”.

at 1st they were for 150 feet but they were lowered to 60

DAI… gimme about a week (sooner if I can) and I’ll find out for sure. My Grandfather was a Bombadier on the Damnbusters Mission but hes alittle hard to get ahold of. In his 80’s and I swear he gets around more than I do

G’day Folks,

‘Mickey’ Martin’s Lancaster AJ-P ‘Popsie’ in the Dams raid the spotlights met in a circle at 60 feet, the code fonts are what you see in the type, if your model is in 48 scale the decals in the kit are supplied to build Flt. Lt. Martins aircraft.
There is also a small company that made the decals for the Aussie piloted aircraft for the dams Raid in both 72 and 48 scales.
Contact Victorian Hobby Centre on 03 9650 4817 they should still have staocks of both scale’s

Rob.

Hey Dai, hope you’re okay.
I always understood that the spotlights were mounted to meet in a circle at the correct height.
As far as I know they were fitted under the fuselage; one just aft of the chin bubble, the other aft of the bomb bay.
Here’s a thing, do you have the Richard Todd film handy ?, I don’t, but can you see if in shots of ‘Scampton’ the guardroom is on the left as you enter the gates, or on the right?
The guardroom at Scampton is on the right.
A letter in Junes Aeroplane monthly states that the film was made at RAF Hemswell, & I’d like to sort it out, if possible, thats where my home is!
All the best
Pete

Guday Pete,
I,ll drag out the video and have a look for you. I could have asked my father who was based at Hemswell but unfortunately he checked out several years ago.
How are things in Saudia?
