With a day off from work, I was able to finish up basic construction on my Konigstiger. I posted up pics of the zim a while back, but didn’t touch the model for quite sometime. It is now finished. Like my Tiger I Mid Pro, the wheels, etc have been left off until painting as well as the tracks. I will be using Fruil Model Tracks instead of the ModelKasten for this project. Bare with the pictures…they are a bit dark, and for some reson I just couldn’t keep my hands still (to much Coffee I think). The Zim was done with my usual method of Polyester Putty and the Tamiya Zimmerit tool. I used Eduad Photo Etched brass. I went with the kits barrel…sanding it down to get a smooth seemless finish, while using the muzzle from Jordi Rubio. I used Historex’s Hex punch and die set for the bolts on the grills and side skirt clamps on the front of the model. I didn’t do to much extra detail on teh rear end, and opted for the kits tow jack clamps ( I forgot to put the jack in for the pics [:p]. Any feedback is appreciated.
I was actually going to head the topic “Shermie would be thrilled by this progress” I know, it takes me forever to finish even one kit…but to have two kits almost done at the same time is a miracle for me. I think I am motivated on finishing up my Cromwell MK. IV and starting my Stug III F/8 with full interior [;)]
Man, that looks awesome! Makes me wanna go buy a king tiger…if only i had the cash…But i think the tank is coming along great, cant wait to see the finished pics.

Man, that is looking good. Makes mine look horrible in comparison. How did you get such nice neat zimmerit with the putty rake. On mine, if I pressed to hard, the putty liquefied and went all over the place. I really wish I had your skills. Fortunately the whole thing is going to be dirtied up and covered with as much foliage as possible.
Hi Smith. What is it your working on? I’m certainally not the zim expert, but my guess is maybe you didn’t let the putty harden enough before using the tool. Thank goodness Rob will chime in and help you (me too!). Good luck.

Smith M, I use Tamiya’s Polyester Putty and I work with it almost immediately after mixing it with the catalyst. What putty are you using for your zim? I never heard of a putty turning to liquid when using the tool.
I’m working on the exact same kit as Moses, and I’m using Tamiya Polyester Putty. I did put in the catalyst, mixed it and used it imediately. I have no idea what the problem is. I’ll be sure to take a picture of the result so you can see.

Smith, remember, you should only be putting in just a little catalyst, about 50 parts putty and 1 part catalyst. To make it easier you should squeeze out the fist bit of putty to get the liquid out. Then squeeze until the putty comes out. Once you see the putty, squeeze a line of putty a few inches long. Then take the catalyst and squeeze and equl legnth down the middle. This should solve your problem. I think you were using the putty when it had alot of the liquid in it. This you do not want.
I only have one negative thing to say - if only it was my work that was this good:D] Another superb zim job. The guys are right when they call you the Master of Zim[^].
Can’t wait to see these kits finished. If the painting and weathering are as good as the build, they will be outstanding models.
PS. Did some ringing around and have located a supplier for the putty not too far away - thanks for the response on the other thread.
Thanks Pete. You will love the Poleyester Putty. All I can say is Practice as much as you can on a scrap piece of plastic card or an old model. Once you feel confident enough to work on a kit, go for it. If you ever need any help with it, my MSN addy is moses96thid@hotmail.com.

Ooooh ahhhh. Beautiful zimmerit work! Puttying on zimmerit is one of those things that separates the men from the boys. I’m a boy! I build early war or late war, or I get applique stuff! [:p]
Then again, you are a German armor fan. I’m more of a generalist. I have everything from Japanese tankettes to a Maus in my WWII collection. Tanks is cool. I loves them.
Thanks Eric and Larry. I can honestly say that this has been the most enjoyable kit for me in all my time with modelling. Although the damn seem lines on the drive sprokets and road wheels were a pain to cleanup, but other then that I can’t wait to paint this sucker. Hopefully I can start a primer coat by next week.
