Hi all, I thought I’d post this build too since it’s on the bench with grille that’s already posted here. The kit is the Dragon Jagdtiger #6285 and not the Tamiya kit, I got this kit at the AMPS East show for $25 and figured I’d finally build a JT wreck. After looking at the interior and gun breech my plans changed from an all out wreck to what I’m calling a sitting duck. I’ll be knocking this JT out but not doing much to the inside and concentrating on the exterior painting. It will be a JT that got stuck in the mud and was hit MANY times by enemy fire.
I don’t have any progress pics to post yet as I’m still working on the interior, but once it’s done and ready for paint I’ll post the pics.
I’m looking forward to painting this baby because as you well know I like to have fun and experiment so stay tuned.
Assuming Shermans- pockmarks, broken track lots of cool damage Yes.
Ever see that famous pic of a Jagpanther with a penetration at the upper edge of the armor which then caught the lip of the engine deck at popped it up…
Glad you guys like the idea, yes lots of dings and pockmarks on this one, a perfect time to try some chipping a la rob. I may use some Fruil tracks that I’ve had for years along with some PE from sets for the KT. I’m still deciding just how much I want to scratch for the interior, I’ll be posting pics this weekend, I’m such a tease [:D].
Steve R. I’m going to need some bases soon my friend, too many models and plans. I grabbed a few good kits at Baycon and the gears are turning. I also got the T62 from Bob, can’t wait.
Hey Steve, I have a base for this model but the others need bases, no rush. Hmm 4 kits [(-D], wish I had the time for that.
Lost everything to that nasty virus a few months ago. No big deal, I have a few models to build before I get to the T55 and T62. I need to build a sherman for Chickopee in March then I’ll see what’s next.
Pics of the JG in progress coming later this morning.
Ok guys here are some progress pics. I started working on the interior, and decided to just use what is supplied in the kit, which isn’t very much. I was planning on scratchbuilding the fire wall with some detail stuff, but after dry fitting the upper and lower I realized that nothing would be visible. The blank fire wall was glued in place and the kit supplied interior glued up and primed.
Here is the primed and base coated interior. the gun mount and gun are to be painted since some of it will be seen.
Here the gun has received a dark thick oil wash and rust powder/pigments added , then dried with a hair dryer.
A nice heavy coat of hair spray and some salt added.
The trusty hair dryer makes quick work of the drying, and no it’s not my hair dryer because I have no hair to dry [BH].
Back to the gun, a couple of light coats of Tamiya white with a drop of buff.
And here is how it looks with the HS and salt removed.
And some oil washes, nice and dirty eh.
This is how it will stay after the oils were dried and some rust and black powder added for the rusted and sooty looking wreck. Total painting time was about 45 min.
The upper and lower hull dry fitted one more time before glueing the two together. Once these dry I’ll start working on the exterior detail.I added some torch cuts were needed and still have more to do when construction continues. As you can see,I hope, I started adding some small caliber pockmarks on the glacis and side of this monster.
Steve, glad you waited for the first update, stick around always a pleasure hearing from you.
Tony, I know what you mean. I build this kit when it was first released, this kit here has the PE, magic tracks and metal barrel so I hoped it would have an updated interior, no such luck. When I do build a JT with interior it will have to be the Tamiya kit which has a much nicer gun.
I’m not sure just how much PE I want to add to this model, I normally use just the screens and small parts. I have a PE set for the KT that I will be using some parts for this, like some of the skirts. I have to practice soldering PE before I tackle this part of the build.
I bought a new camara yesterday, a cheap one but it takes ok pics I think. More updates to follow today so stay tuned.
Spectacular work, once again–and thank you for taking the time and effort to document your steps! You posts are invaluable insights into this mode of weathering!
The is an interior available form Jaguar, I believe, and it’s pretty thorough. I have one of 'em–I’m planning a Jagdtiger opened up with the interior all visible from the roof basically, some day. You might be able to find one through eBay?
Thanks for dropping on this build Doog. Yep it’s a very nice resin set but hard to find and expensive too. The next JT wreck will be with a blown roof plate and maybe an engine comp, but I’ll use the Tamiya kit instead, the gun is better detailed than the Dragon gun.
Ok I did the weld seams on the front and rear of the hull using Squadron white putty and my home made welding tools. These have come in handy over the years.
Next I added some pock marks and a bit more small (mg) caliber marks. Once again using high tech tools, metal rods with rounded ends of different diameter. For the small caliber marks I simply hit the model with the smallest/pointed end and heated the larger ones with a lighter. Simple as that
Here is the round that did this JT in. A direct hit below the sponson, right where the fuel tanks are located.
Here are some of the items I would like to use on this model. First some parts from the Lion Roar Kingtiger PE set.
Next and I’m not sure which to use are the tracks. Here is what I have. I was thinking more toward the Transport tracks. Which of these can I use on this model???
Hey wait a sec… I thought I was further on than this[%-)] I see what I did… I’m in Rob’s thread. Oh thank heaven… I though I had to do all that over again.
[:D]
Looks great Rob. I’ve never tried the salt before but really like the waythat looks. Gonna do that on the tow cable ends on that other Jagdtiger[:-^]
