I am not sure what to post this under but what is kitbashing. I always hear about models being kitbashed but I dont know what they mean.
The term ‘kitbashing’ usually refers to taking parts from several kits and using them in a build. The parts may be used either whole or cut & modified. A similar term is kitmingling
I’ve only heard of it as,“kitbashing”,or “kitbashed”. This is taking parts from either one,or more models. This is done to save time for movie studios. Kitbashed refers to using only a few parts and not the entire model built as it should be. Some models are used for the design because their parts look like something that would be on a spaceship,or because they look “cool” with an interesting design.
This way you don’t need to recast, unless you’re using the same part over and over. The problem with this is,many model builders use the original kits to be more authentic to the original screen used prop without recasting these parts,as they’re only using them for one build. The lineage of the models dwindles as time goes on because many of these kits are no longer made and are being used for single builds. ILM used the exact same kits for almost all their builds,so they used more than one kit, being that casting was still widely unused at that time for budget constraints. That and, recasting was still new technology in the seventies.
Now that we have smooth cast and other companies,we can preserve the lineage of these models. Sadly, there are still modelers that don’t recast these parts and use them without a second thought! I can understand if they recast the parts, then used the originals, but they don’t.
I use that word in the same way. Here is an exapmle of a kitbash:

Here is a good example of a kitbash.

I wanted to make my own verson of the Heavyarms custom design. So I took the torso, head, hands, gun, leg missle packs and shoulders from the kit. I then took the arms and shield from a Zaku II kit and attached them. I took the lower torso from a RX-78-2. I took the backpack to Shin Matsunga’s custom zaku II and attached it. Last I took the artillery rifle from the groundpounder gundam, switched the barrell with the gattling barrel from the heavyarms custom kit, and attached it. I did whatever modifications I had to, to make them fit together, opening of holes, bit of putty or glue, etc. I then took some extra aftermarket parts, hoses, chain lengths, whatever and used them to detail the modifications.
Im not happy with it anymore, I want to re-do it, but its a perfect example
Sorry about not posting back. Thanks for the comments. Now I understand what kitbashing is. Thanks again.
