Kiowa pic's A & D

this is all I have right now

John,

Awesome shots! Do you have any more info on the shot with the KW and the Abramses?

Jon
Sorry I don’t, found it on the web, it is a DOD photo though

Thanks John!
Lee

Found another neat shot of a KW. This one is from the 4th ID.

good shot

Well, I hit the 25th ID website today and found a BUNCH of “Tropic Lightning” Kiowas.
Question is, does anyone make a resin “sharp-nose” conversion? Here’s why

Saw this post and assumed someone was after Kiowa pics.

I’m not sure if this pic will be useful outside of reference for the Kiowa in the general sense of the aircraft type, but if its helpful to you in any way, please be my guest[:)]

Its a Canadian Armed Forces’ CH-136 Kiowa, which if I recall correctly were “A” models. This particular one was serving with 408 Squadron at CFB Edmonton in 89 or 90 at the time I took the picture.

Canadian Kiowas didn’t carry a lot in the way of armaments as they usually were used in the Loach role. They did on occaision carry six unguided rockets (three on each side).

Hope I’ve been of some help to you.

Here’s a pretty sharp pic.

Cheers,

Another one I found

1/25 Avn Rgt

John,

That top one is pretty cool. There’s even an Apache in it… if you look waaaaaaaaay off in the distance on the upper left… no mistaking that silhouette.

The second shot is from 1-25th Attack. The pic I posted earlier is from the same unit. May even be the same bird.

I did find a REALLY cool pic today, though. It isn’t a Kiowa, but since we’re talking pictures, I’ve gotta share it. (you’re all probably gonna think I’m nuts), but check this out.

I have NEVER seen an Apache configured as a Heavy Hog. And the inboard tan rocket pod makes me think it was borrowed from the Marines, since the 211th Aviation is currently working with Marine units in Oruzgan, Afghanistan.

My son served in the USAF on a MH-53E and would like me to make a model of one for him. I can’t find a kit of that model. Is there one somewhere I can obtain?

If he was in USAF, it wasn’t an E version. Only USN/USMC uses the E version. USAF would be a HH-53C or D version, or an MH-53J. They are quite diferent aircraft. Italeri did a model in 1/72 scale. Revell and Fujima also have one in 1/72, Revell also made a 1/48 scale model as well.

Here is a prior thread with more info on the CH-53E and comparicons to CH/HH-53A-D models.

Hope that helps.

Jon
It is a good pic, you are propably right about where they got the pods, makes since to arm them that way for the type of missions they fly. I have seen pic’s before of four pod Apaches, not standard but was built for it to be done.

John,

Yep, they went to just two hellfires and full rocket pods a long time ago in Afghanistan. Buddies of mine were flying in that configuration and with the belly tank instead of all but 90 rounds of cannon ammo back in 02.

Its good to see an Apache in a heavy hog setup. Bout time it was done operationally!

Anyhow, back to work!

Jon
