I finished my 1/48 Hasegawa Ki-100-I Otsu this evening. I used an Eduard photoetch detail set in it’s cxonstruction. This included cockpit items, flaps, and drop tank items. The rear and sliding portions of the canopy are a Squadron vac, as the kit’s is molded shut. I also added wiring to the engine and hydraulic lines to the gear legs.
I used the out-of-production AeroMaster Warbird acrylic Kawasaki Army Green on the topside camo, and their Red-Brown Primer on the prop. The ID bands and drop tanks are Color of Eagles RLM 04 (yellow). The undersurfaces are painted with four shades of Alcad: Aluminum, White Aluminum, Duraluminum, and Dark Aluminum. I used the kit decals.
Hope you like it, here’s the pics ! (please forgive the dust on the closeups !)
It’s very obvious why members of this forum have such a high regard for you as a modeler. That is one fabulous piece of work. Congratulations on a job well done. [alien]
T-34 Here’s a pic of the actual aircraft. You can see that there is no paint chipping or staining anywhere. In my opinion, most models of Japanese aircraft are over-weathered.
Awesome work as usual Pix. I think it looks great un-weathered. I don’t think it should be highly weathered just because it’s Japanese. I think alot of models of Jap aircraft are over weathered too, and I’ve never seen photo’s of real aircraft weathered to the levels you see on some models.
So thanks for showing us a great looking model. Not just a flying weathering job.
Another great build Pix. I totally agree with you on the overdone weathering seen on many models, especially of Japanese aircraft. Having looked at 1,000’s of pics from WW2, it’s very rare to find any in-service aircraft even remotely as beat up as some depict. I think it’s a modeling fad that hopefully models such as yours will help diminish.
Are you kidding, I always like your builds. We must be on the same wavelengths, I’ve been searching for a Ki-100 and here you have one built. Awesome, where did you find yours, or has it been in the stash for awhile? Thanks for sharing. Also where can you find the paints?
Thank you pingtang, mkhoot, Butz, Tankmaster, Rick, Jason, fightnjoe, tigerman, and ModelNerd !
pingtang and Rick - yes, models of Japanese aircraft with chipped paint are very popular. I try to base my builds on photos taken during wartime. I also don’t care much for the looks of a weathered aircraft on a clean shelf. If it’s in a dio, weathering is essential, as it’s part of the environment. To me, a weathered model on a clean shelf is as out-of-place as a clean model in a dio. It’s just my taste; others prefer different things, but it’s ALL good !
Jason - the tops of the fabric surfaces are a slightly lighter shade of Kawasaki Army Green, and they’re Model Master Japanese Army Gray on the lowers. A lightened RAF Sky Type S or Luftwaffe “Rlm 84” are also close matches.
tigerman - I bought this one back in '98. It was assembled, minus flaps, engine, and cowl. I put it back in the box when I lost one of the landing gear “scissors” (I made a replacement from the metal of a pastry tin !). I looked at a couple of e-tailers, and it’s not listed anywhere. It could be out-of-production at the moment. Hasegawa is pretty good about re-issuing kits, so I expect it will be back on the market at some point. The AeroMaster Warbird acrylics are also out-of-production. They were the only acrylics (outside of Gunze $$) that I ever liked. The topside color looks similar to WW II Russian tank green to me (armor experts would probably know).
Thanks again for the enthusiastic replies to my ongoing “Meatball Mania!”
tigerman - I have a few more Japanese aircraft in the pile. I’ll probably build Hasegawa’s 1/48 Ki 43 Oscar (NICE kit) next.
Brian - I’ve built a couple Ki 61s, and the Ki 100 razorback. As far as I know, this was the last production version. I’ve seen pics of a Ki 100 with intakes at the wingroot, but those were unfinished or damaged in a bombed-out factory. I have to dig a littyle further.
