Just built a Humvee

Hi all,

I thought I’d share my latest build, Italeri’s M998 HMMWV Desert Patrol. I built this model to try some weathering techniques and it’s step one of a planned Desert Storm dio. I had to put AMT’s HMMWV slant back roof on, I just thought it looked better on a Humvee. I realize the intake and exhaust aren’t correct for the USMC version, I may fix that later. But I definitely welcome thoughts/critiques on the weathering as I plan to get on with the rest of the dio soon. Thanks, and don’t be shy.[:D]

Nice job! It looks really real w/ the background.

Looks great. In regards to the fording kit, when I was in the Corps between '91-'99, not all of our HMMWV’s had the intake stack. All of them, to my knowledge, had the taller exhaust stack though. Could just be one last thing to scratch-build if you decide to go that route.

Looks pretty good. Good thing you changed out the top on the HMMWV. The Italeri Desert Patrol HMMWV was based on a prototype vehicle that was not purchased by the US Military. The top was never used in that configuration and Italeri got the rear wrong as well. The prototype had two long vertical doors in the back, no tailgate. Also, the front bumper is incorrect as well. The prototype had 4 holes and the production vehicles have 3 holes. Good job on it. Keep us posted on the dio. It sounds good.

Looks incredible! I thought it was a real photograph! The windows look very cool!

…nice, did you sand down the tire tread a bit to get a worn look on them?

Very nice build & excellent weathering. Thanks for sharing.

Regards, Rick

Probably not. You don’t need to with the Italeri tires. They are poorly molded with weak definition and the tread pattern does not represent any real tires that were ever on a HMMWV. They do look pretty worn down though.

Arty’s right. I didn’t even realize until until I was almost done that I hadn’t lined up the tread blocks properly. Something the A/M couldn’t cure if it gets to bugging me. Thanks for all the responses and feedback. Off to the workbench…
