Junkers GB

In 2022 and over the next few years i’ll continue the theme of manufacture Group Builds. I’ll be doing one a year alternating between German and British companies. And for 2022, that company will be Junkers.

The company was founded by Hugo Junkers in 1895, originally building boilers and radiators. They turned to aircraft production just before the start of WW1, their first design, the J 1, the first flyable aircraft to have an all metal structure. A few of their dsigns served during WW1, including a couple of ground attack aircraft. After the war they continued to design and build aircraft, including the W 33. One of these, the Breman, was the first heavier than air aircraft to make the more difficult east to west crossing of the Atlantic none stop. The company almost collapsed in the early 1930’s, and with the arrival of National Socialisim, it was taken over by the newgoverment whichc did not trust Hugo Junkers. He died in 1935 and soon after his widow gave over all control and interests to the Reich.

The company’s aircraft played a leading role in German military operations in WW2. The Ju 52, Ju 87 and Ju 88 all played vital roles in the campaigns of the early war and all fought on till the end, with the Ju 88 being produced in a huge range of variants.

In addition to aircraft, the company also produced engines. Seperated from the parent company in 1923, Junkers Jumo built engines wihich powered a number of aircraft in WW2, both Junkers and other companies. These included the 004 jet engine which powered the Me 262 and Ar 234.

The company survived after the war and was involved in research into areospace desins. In the 1960’s it was absorded into MBB and the Junkers name vanished in 1969.

So much for the history, the GB is open to all Junkers designs, those that entered service and those that didn’t. Its also open to aiy aircraft powered by a Junkers Jumo engine. But note that with some aircrfat, only certain variants used a Jumo, such as the early variants of the Bf 109 and 110.

Build starts on 1st Jan and runs throughout 2022.

Partial builds allowed as are cross overs.

Plenty of pics.

If you need some ideas, check out the Junkers Wiki page which includes a list of anircraft and engines.

Now lets see those Tante Ju’s, 88’s and of course those Stuka’s.

Being the genorus sole i am, you of course have a choice of badge. Please pick one and display with pride.

badge number 1, well, what did you expect.

Badge number 2, bit of an oddity.

And number 3, the Breman.

Enjoy.

count me in Bish.

I didn’t join your Supermarine or Messerschmitt GBs, so I’m in with this. It’s the first Airfix kit I’ve ever bought, and I only picked it up because of the Stuka that fotofrank posted in the Messerschmitt GB. I liked the camo scheme on it.

Count me in with Academy’s 1/72 Ju87G-1 Stuka Tank Buster.

Ok guys, i’ll get you on the list. Your gonna love that Kanonvogel Robert, best 72nd Stuka out there IMHO.

Look forward to seeing that 48th kit, i built their 72nd B-2 last year, really nice.

It would seem I can be a positive influence.

But that also mean you get the blame if it goes wrong [:D]

I’m in, mate - put me down for the Revell 1/72 Ju88 A1.

I’d like to clear off the bench and start things off fresh for the new year. I’m thinking an Italeri Ju-188 in 1/72 would be a nice way to start. The only question is which kit to build out of the pile. Have some Aimes decals so that should help narrow things down a bit.

Nice to have you on board guys.

Hutch, look forward to seeing that. I have that kit and the earlier A-4 and they look like stunning kits.

68, look forward to seeing that. There is some nice stuff at Aim’s. I have thought about getting one of their 32nd Ju 188 conversions but haven’t got aroudbn to it yet. I have used their decals on a He 219 and they were rather nice.

I’m building the ju-87 airfix in 1/48 also.

Hey Bish please go ahead and put me down for the 1/48th Dragon Ju-188E-1 Avenger.

I did a little work on the cockpit over 25 years ago but my skills are so much better now I need to disassemble all of that and repaint it.

Will get you on the list G, that will be a nice size.

I’m in as well Bish. I’ll look through the stash for something that says JU

Count me in, Bish. I actually have ZERO kits of Junkers subjects in the stash, so - horrors! - I’ll have to go kit shopping!

I’m sure you guys can find somthing. And remember, it doesn’t need to say Ju 0n the box. An Me 262 or early Bf 109 or 110 will work. The He 111 from the E onwards had Jumo engines amongst others.

I have this. Apperently the P was powered by the DB whereas the H was Jumo powered.

What do you think? Either that or I can get an 88 or 87 or even a Tante Ju [:^)]

Thats correct Steve. I got was slightly in error when i said they had jumo’s from the E version. I got confused because the he 111 variants jump from F to J then P and finally H. Buth the E and H had Jumo’s, the other types had diferent make sof engines. Of course that kit can be built as a P or H.

Cool, put 'er down
