It should both be models where you an see the VTOL systems well. If possible where you can place the doors for the VTOL intake/exhaust open, so you can see them well.
Both Italeri and Revell-Germany have both prototypes out. The R-G kits use the Italeri tooling and include newer decals (including the X-35B Hat Trick tail markings). The X-35 is the STOVL version with the liftfan visible through open doors as well as the rotated tailpipe. The X-32 is more generic but I seem to recall it did show the lft portion of the aircraft on the bottom.
I built the original Italeri kits both some time ago (pics attached) and they do build up to nice looking models, but are far from accurate to the prototypes. From incorrect landing gear to “stealthy” doors to a weapons bay, they don’t stand up to close inspection for accuracy, but make decent looking aircraft. The X-35 is a harder build with some interesting fit problems, but isn’t all that bad. Some of my problems come from building everything closed us which is not what Italeri expected. The X-32 goes together VERY easily except for trying to deal with the seam in the huge front intake. Lots of sanding sticks and patience. FWIW I am including my builds below.
All I can say is, I wish Hasegawa would tackle the current crop of active aircraft rather than Italeri. Their parts fit is usually pretty bad. Glad to see them doing the F/A-18E/F, but I wish they’d go for the F-22, Eurofighter, Rafale. etc, especially in 1/48. Italeri (do they just rebox Svezda’s kits?) and their crappy fit is getting on my nerves.
He missed some things on the X-35 which I will try to report on in a day or two. His fix on the wing position on the X-32 is overkill, but the aft fuselage does need to be moved a little aft along with the modification of the vertical fin/rudder.
How about the Full Scale Development (FSD) version of the Boeing X-32? I saw a photo in an add that showed the longer nose, modified “monica” intake, and the separate hoirizontal tabs. I think it was a Revell-Germany ad but then never saw the kit. THEN, the Squadron Mail Order flyer for June comes out with that same photo of the X-32 in the section for Italeri. I quickly checked with Squadron, but they apologized and said it was the wrong photo for the version they are selling. I asked if they knew where the photo came from and where could I get a kit like that, but they did not know.
I finally found a Revell-Germany X-35 kit with the VSTOL tail markings but it was supposedly 1/144. I was hoping to find someone with the kit in 1/72 that didn’t need the VSTOL tail markings so I wouldn’t have to create them. Anybody know any different?
so Tamiya = Italeri ? So whats the story ? Tamiya was to lazy to develop its own molds ?
And a maybe stupid question : wich ones are the best ? The original Italeri ones ? Or are the Tamiya exact the same ? Or lesser quality then the ones from Italeri, so everyone buys the Italeri ones ? Anyone an id ?
