Johnson's Future floor wax has a name change

For those of us who blow Johnson’s Future through an airbrush, or treat canopies or do other chores with this stuff, note that it has been renamed to “Pledge” with Future shine.

My last bottle of this stuff lasted well over a decade, but when you run out, you will need it. You might want to pick up a bottle now. If they are renaming it, it means that they are having trouble selling it, and might withdraw it from the market.

It may be that they are just looking for some uniformity in the name. SC Johnson is a multi-national company, and they sell this stuff worldwide under a number of different names. In Australia, for example, it is marketed under the name “pledge”. 25 years ago, when we used to wipe it over our spit polished army boots, it was called “one go”, which still appears on the Aussie bottles under the word “pledge” I think the sales from modellers alone would keep them in the black ?

where is a good place to pick some up?..i looked all over today…didnt see any…

Not sure in the States, but certainly in Australia you can pick up Pledge One Go from the household cleaning aisle of the larger grocery stores (eg Woolworths).

Also, i’d be interested to see if it’s the same formula. Our Pledge has a light yellow tinge to it - i understand your future is clear. Having said that, i read in FSM that Future turns yellow when it gets old…

Hope you can find some.

Are you sure about this ? The brand name “Pledge” has been around for a long time & is marketed more as a Furniture Polish, where “Future” has been marketed as a Floor polish. I just bought a new bottle of Future at the local Krogers & they had the shelf well stocked.

I just bought a new bottle at Wal Mart a couple weeks back and it is the same exact name it always has been. The bottle looks exactly like this:

I seriously doubt there’s any trouble selling the stuff.

I used to work with advertising types when I worked as a graphic artist and this is just a little tactic they use called “Rebranding”

Its bad business practice to keep your product’s name and/or packaging the same for long stretches of time; you have to keep it looking fresh. the easiest way is to rebrand or repackage it, that is not changing the product content but the way you present it and what you call it.

People get bored easily, so you have to keep them interested.

Rebranding and repackaging are, when used properly, not indicators of lagging sales, but preventative measures to keep sales from lagging in the first place.

Costco, by the case.

I checked Wal Mart and three different grocery stores in the local area and they all had copious quantities of Future in the chemicals/house cleaner section. I still have about a 1/2 bottle that I bought several years ago, so I didn’t buy any more.

The name change went from Super Stride, then to Super Shine and finally Pledge. But the Pledge is not the same composition as the previous two badgings. Pledge now has ammonia in it. I have still got 2/3 of a bottle of Super Stride and though milky in fluid form (dries clear) has a similar smell to Future.

The renaming of Johnsons Super Stride/Shine to Pledge, plus the addition of ammonia seems to be restricted to Australia only.

Club members and some Aussie forum members report that too heavy an application onto acrylic based paintwork will result in the paintwork being affected.

So be careful with the stuff. I do believe that Clayton from Hawkeye Decals was intending to import Future from the US, so that might be worth following up.

cheers

Mike

There is nothing about this change on the company website. As they are local to my area, I’ll be giving them a call to get the information from the source. Probably won’t be able to do it tomorrow, but some time this week.

Hello Jim,
In the UK we have same product under the brand name ‘Klear’.

It’s available in pretty near all supermarkets, so I can’t see it going off the shelves anytime soon.
All the best,
Mick C.

Time to re-stock.

My bottle only lasted me 5 years!

Time to hit Tesco’s, when it re-opens that is.

Happy Xmas all.

Karl

That is almost unbelievable. My understanding is that there is alot of polishing going on in SFO.

sure is…you should come on out and see for your self…i will assume that since that was the first thing that popped into your little head when you thought of san francisco thats where your interests would lie…

I just called S.C. Johnson and downloaded the MSDS for Future. The change is in name only, for marketing purposes as others have already explained. The name change was made in Noember 2007. The last formulation change was a fragrance change in 1992. There are no current plans to change the formulation of this product.

The MSDS is listed on the web site under “other floor products.”

Essentially, the name has been changed, and the product family has been changed, to justify some VP of Advertising’s salary.
