Hello all!
Just a quick question…whats the best way install those “burner cans”? or “turkey feathers”?I dont know their real name(sorry) for jet aircraft… my f-14 has six parts and im concerned about the gaps between the pieces ruining the finish… they’re not fittnig the greatest right now, im trying to use a rubber band to keep the tension on but they just keep movin around on me. any suggestions pls and thanks mark
In your case, I do not think there is an easy answer.
If what you mean by the “gaps between the pieces” is at the roots of the afterburner flaps, then you got some work to do.
If this is the case, you will need to take a small file or sanding tool and working your way around the nozzles, carefully remove some of the circumference from each of nozzles the flaps fit on, until it is small enough where you have no gap. If you remove a little too much, then you will have to shave off a little from the flaps, until you get the fit right.
Meanwhile, to help prevent this, you can pre-assemble the flaps. I would make a fixture out of something the right diameter for the flaps (maybe a thread spool, a bottle, a piece of dowling, or cut a circle out of something), assemble them seperately on a flat surface covered with some wax paper, glue them together, and with them bonded as a unit, carefully dry check your fit onto the F-14’s nozzles, shaving a little off here and there until you get the right fit.
Also, you can make a gauge by measuring the correct smaller circle diameter, and either by using a circle template with the right size hole, or making a hole in some stiff paper or cardboard, you can check your work in progress and that would reduce the amount of times you would need to handle the assembled flaps.
OK?
