what are the pros and cons of a gravity feed airbrush?

(i just got the IWATA Revouloution CR today, the price was totally awesome ($71.95) for an IWATA airbrush that is)

Easy Peasy

Pros:

Lower air pressure allows finer control

Gravity fed cup wastes less paint

Cons:

Finer control requires finer skill level

If they ever repeal the Law of Gravity, you’re pooched!

The Iwata Revolution CR is a great airbrush. No problem spraying Vallejo, Tamayia and Gunz Sanyo paints acrylic paints. I have no problems spaying pencil size lines. Very fine lines will require some practice with air pressure and paint to thinner ratio’s. You can buy a pre-set handle from Bear-Air for $17.00 which will make spraying finer lines much easier. As far as any Con’s, I really can’t think of any. I have bought the Aztek 4709 (crap), Badger 155 and Iwata HP-C Plus and my main brush is the Iwata CR. In fact I don’t even use the Badger or Aztek because they don’t even compare in performance. The Iwata HP-C Plus is a nice brush but isn’t as friendly to use as the CR. As you can tell I like the CR quite a bit. You won’t be disappointed with your purchase.

Ditto to the preset handle recommendation for it will help you cheat the fine control department for consistent fine lines, pretty much by making the airbrush into a single action control. though if you want to better master airbrush control, use the AB with the preset fully released to give your trigger finger some practice.

And yea, be careful when spraying metalizer paint through a gravity-fed since the metal flakes sometimes settle really fast and clog the AB.

i will not defend the aztek a single bit cuz i hated mine several years ago as well. but putting 155 against other graphic-fed AB would be comparing apples to oranges. it’s just not designed to achieve the same thing. =P

I have two, CR and BR. Lov’em. I’d like to get a CR with the 1/16th oz color cup but they don’t make one. It would be great for doing stuff where I only need a drop or two of paint. If they ever make one I’m buying it.
