Italeri 1/72nd Do 24 Completed pics Page 2

Looks pretty good so far Bish, I’ll be interested in seeing if you paint it with the wings on or off. Just out of curiosity, how big is the kit? It looks to be a pretty decent size for 1/72.

Thanks Bob, i have decided to go for wings on. I didn’t face risking ruining the paint job trying to get all the supports glued in place.

Its 12inches long and 15inch wingspan.

I thought the shelves were for the crew’s model planes and supplies? Thats what I’d put in there. Or any shelf for that matter. lol.

Impressive work on the PE interior. Any difficulties gluing them together?

I really like your choice of subject. Very cool to see you building a floater. And it is a beaut. Your work with that PE set is very well done. Glad you were able to snag that nice set. I’m anxious to see your paint work on it.

Nice work. I have that kit in the stash, picked up on a sale table.

PE, my gosh who would think?

I’d be glad to give it to anyone following this build.

Thanks guys.

allan, everything wnet to gether pretty well. The PE was rather nice to work with.

Been a while since i last updated, but i have been pluging away. I made the decision to add the wings before painting and its worked out ok. So with everything together, firstly i gave it a coat of primer. I had intended to take some pics before this, bhut of course, i forgot, again, so here she is all primed up.

So after that, it was time to paint. I was all set to do a nice 70/71 splinter. But i was checking over my decals instructions to decide which aircrfat i was going to do when i spotted it had 72/73 for the upper colours. I thought this can’t be right, bt then after a few seconds the penny droped, its a maritime aircraft so has differant colours. That was just in the nick of time.

So, i have spent the last week painting, drying, masking, painting some more and so on. Being more fam, ilar with the 70/71 scheme, i was surprsied at how little contrast there is between these two colours.

And then today, time for the decals. I have gone for an aircraft based in Norway in 1942. I used print Scale decals. Its the second time i have used this brand, they lay down very nice but are so thin and very easy to damage so can be a pain to use.

With all that drying time, i have been able to get some work on the bse and ground vehciles.

For the base, i want a slightly sloping slipway. I had no idea what the angle should be so just guesstemate it. The slope goes from the front left corner to the rear right corner in this pic.

And for vehicles, i have an SS-100 from Special Hobby. This is my second SS-100 this year, the other being a resin one from Kora.

I have managed to get some of this together and ready to paint inside the cab.

And this will be towing the trolley from Kora.

And this has gone together nicley and been painted. There were a couple of biuts missing. But after my experiance getting the SS-100 direct, it took about 2 months, i decided to just scatch the missing bits.

So now i need to get to the weathering. Never haveing done a seaplane before, i have been reading up and checking out some pics and have a few ideas of how to get a nice grubby look, so we will see how that goes.

Very impressive PE detail Bish - nicely done.

Looking forward to seeing this dio come together.

Chris

Thanks Chris.

This thread must have been burried for a while… I seem to have missed it until now.

That is not an aircraft I have ever seen before, Bish. Unusual one for sure. That splinter scheme is really sweet and I’m almost surprised you didn’t plan on having it in some water, but we all know how intimidating that is lol.

This build is really looking fantastic. I’m loving it so far!

Thnaks Mike, it has been a while since i posted, mainly because of the time it took to paint and waiting until i had somthing worthwhile.

Its not a type you see built very often. The Germans used a number of differant types of maritime aircrfat and they are often overlooked. The 24 was perhaps one of their most important, especially in the role of air sea rescue as well as recon.

I have never done water before, so decided to not try and over do it. And i like the idea of the aircraft being edged down the ramp to the waters edge. I do have another seaplane, the big BV 222 and that will be a full water dio, but thats for another time.

I’m looking forward to it, buddy. I’m really looking forward to it.

Absolutely wonderful work on the paint scheme Bish. It looks righteous.

I like that you are using the Kora transport. I’ve been wanting to get one for my Revell/Matchbox 1/72 Heinkel He-115 but, I’ve balked so far because of the price. How are they quality/detail wise? I’ve wanted to do exactly what your doing with the He-115. Really excited to see your end result and how your ramp comes out.

Thanks Joe.

I do like the Kora stuff. Both this and the SS-100 went together nicley. I know there pricey, the SS-100 was over £30 and this trolley was nearly 20, same as the 115 trolley. But the resin is well detailed, there is a nice subtle wood grain effect along the outer edges, and its easy enough to cut with more parts broken. Instructions could be a bit better, pretty basic.

I do need to get one of those 115’s. I built one many many years ago, must have been the matchbox boxing. I really like the look of that aircraft. I am just hopeing the base works out. The adges are on, i just need to do the tarmac and then add the water, which is the bit i am not sure of.

All that extra detailing paid off. Looks great. Can’t wait for the masterful diorama.

Thanks Johnny. No pressure then [:D]

Lookin good, Bish. The parts came together really well. Mustve been hard painting between the wing and the fuselage?

I guess I missed this since I usually don’t pay as much attention to 1/72 builds (I work exclusively in 1/48 for aircraft) but I’m glad I dropped by since it’s such an interesting aircraft and your work never disappoints when I view your builds.

I’m always intimidated about air brushing a camo scheme when the wings are on the fuselage. I guess I worry about my ham handed painting and masking techniques/skills [:$]. You seem to have carried it off perfectly.

Mike

Thanks guys.

Painting under the wing was not as bad as i was expecting. The blue of course was fine as there was no need for masking. When it came to the green, i didn’t worry to much about masking the struts, i just went over that after with a brush. All in all, i think it was a better call than trying to fit the wings after painting, i hate trying to glue painted parts.

I realised last night its been nearly two weeks sinc ei updated. I don’t where the time has gone and despite haveing the build nearly complete, i don’t seem to have done much. So, here is a short update before the final pics.

The aircrfat itself didn’t ned much work to get it finishe. I used some Flory Wash, especially long the water line, to get the look i wanted. Then it was just some exhaust staining and all the last pieces were added.

The beaching trolley is now ready for the aircraft to be added.

And the SS 100 just needs a few more pieces fitted.

And the base has realy come on. I wanted to change from the darker grey concrete i have been doing on aircrfat builds. I found a tutorial online that i really liked the look of so gave that a try.I am much happier with this finish.

And for the wtaers edge, i started with some flory washes and then added some Woodland fine turf for algea and then wodland realistic water. After that dried i use some water effects fr ropples. This is suppose to dry clear but a few bits have stayed white. But i still have a bit more to add to this.

So, just got to finish the water, add everything to the base and a couple more figures.
