Italeri 1/48 Hurricane Mk.1 Trop WIP/Review

I started the new Italeri 1/48 Hurricane. This kit hit the market recently and I have the privilege to build it. It looks to be a very nice kit with good detail and fit.

The box contains 1 parts bag containing 4 grey sprue trees and a separate bagged clear tree,. A small PE set and decal sheet for 6 different versions complete the contents.

The 16 page instruction booklet has 10 pages of instructions and 6 pages reserved for marking instructions.

Version A - RAF 274 Sdn, Gerawla, Egypt 1941

Version B - RAF 74 Sdn, Malta 1942

Version C - RAF 185 Sdn, Hal Far, Malta 1941

Version D - RAF 73 Sdn, Western Desert 1941

Version E - RAF 73 Sdn, El Adam, Libya 1941

Version F - RAF SAAF 3 Sdn, South African Air Force, Abyssinia 1941

I plan on building Version D.

I started on the cockpit which contains the majority of the PE parts as the Sutton harness and instrument panel. It builds up very nicely and the fit is excellent.

The kit also contains a nicely detailed Merlin engine which can be shown with most of the cowlings off. I plan one showing the engine in all it’s glory and maybe scratch some hoses to enhance the already excellent detail if necessary.

The cockpit and engine are in their place.

Wow, the pit and engine look great! Putting the tools in the pics helps with showing the size of each. They always look so much bigger than they really are without something to give perspective. Looks like a really well made kit.

So is Italeri jumping into the game with some new modern tooled kits too??

Also something you will be intrested in. I purched the Airfix 1/72 RAF Groung Crew set and will be putting some of these guys in on another diorama along with some of the equipment.

They look a lot better than depicted on the box.

Thanks Mike, I thought it would LOL.

Well now this is a problem. I glued the fuse half’s together and assembled the wing. As everything was drying I dry fit the wing to take a look at what I was facing for a gap.

Now to my recollection, isn’t the leading edge of the wing supposed to fit behind the engine cowl? I thought there must be a piece that fits under the cowl. No. Do I have the wing on backwards? No. Looking through the instructions there isn’t a hint of why this is happening.

I will be contacting Italeri and inquiring the possible reason. Is this wing going to be used on a Mk.2 etc.?

Stop the assembly line until a resolution is found. Back to the stash to look for something else while my AB and current build are down.

Well now, that’s just not a good fit now is it? The rear looks like a simple cut/trim to fit would work fine, but the front looks a bit more complicated. Being the type that doesn’t like to wait on others to give me a solution, I would be trimming the front and rear to fit and moving on; if that would work that is. Hard to tell without holding it in my hands.

Yeah, but I’m writing a review for it soooo, correct parts would be good. If Italeri dosn’t come through with replacements I’ll do that. The rest of the kit looks good and I would imagine that this lower wing is for a later version.

Just a boxing boo boo off a new run.

Ah yes, I wasn’t thinking along those lines. And yes, that’s a big problem that they definately need to address.

It must be really frustrating to have to be dead in the water like this. I’m really interested to hear what Italeri has to say about that misfit. Your conjecture about the wing perhaps belonging to a different version would make sense if, of course, they’re producing such a kit.

Your initial work with the engine and the pit is outstanding as usual.

Do let us know what the problem is when you find out.

I was about to start this and dry fitted the fuselage and wings, same issue. What was the resolution?

I received a new wings parts tree after 14 weeks and had the same issue. The fuselage may be the problem or Italeri may have messed up this kits parts list. Mine was free but since you paid for yours you will have a lot more pull getting this resolved. I’m sure they have heard of a reoccurring issue by now so they may have it fixed. If you contact customer service at Hobyco they are very helpful.

The pit and engine look great. Too bad about the fit with the wing. Time to get the Dremel out.

I can’t understand how they could have made such a pigs ear of that wing. It is definitely too long as the join should be exactly where you would expect, at the rear of the under-engine cowling panel. As for later versions, I am 99.99% sure that even though there were several different marks of Hurricane, unlike several other famous fighters, there were no major structural changes between marks (except for the very early change to metal skinned wings). No, the manufacturer has simply stuffed up, so I would be surprised if you got any joy out of them

The desert filters were in that area but as far as I know they were added on to the lower skin profile. Looks like a goof to me. Bummer all around.

I did send them a mail , with various links to websites where this was reported. It was quite an expensive kit for a 1/48, so hope the sort it out.
