Is there ANY chrome paint you can mask over?

Without applying Future and ruining the metallic look to begin with.

I see the AK Extreme metal paints pull right off the model when masked, right down to bare styrene.

Testors may hold but the sheen gets pulled off with the Tamiya yellow tape.

I’m building a 1/24 Mercedes Actro truck model and the gas tanks should be chrome but the straps/holders should be the chassis color.

Also the straps are too “ornate” to just sand off and use evergreen styrene stock to make the straps. I’ll lose the detail.

Any ideas?

Hello!

You might try Gunze Super Metalizer - this paint is really nice and hard when dry, and masking is no problem. Here’s what I’ve been able to do with it:

One question would be it it’s shiny enough for you. Otherwise you have to do as Rambo wrote - maybe paint the whole tank body color and just mask the straps and Alclad everything else?

I have masked over Alclad, though I don’t like to. While the adhesion of alclad is pretty good, adhesive from the tape can change the sheen. If I do mask over Alclad I like to use Post-it pieces.

Old testor’s “Buffing Metallizer” is good.

You said “chrome” and "gas tanks’. Wouldn’t Future Gloss be useful?

I have the buffing metalizer. It will pull up.

I can’t paint the straps first then mask them because they are not flat, they are more ornate , for lack of a better word. So painting them first and then trying to mask them will be a nightmare.

Future will always ruin the true metal sheen on any metallic paint. It simply won’t look like true metal, after the Future. A trade-off some people can accept. I’m trying to avoid that.
