Modelers, I’m looking for a 1/32 or 1/35 scale Iraqi vehicle. I’m actually not sure what they used, but I’m looking for something they used that would have been along the same lines a the US JEEP. It would be a vehicle seen on Iraqi airstrips just before and during the first Gulf War. Maybe a vehicle that the pilots would have been carried to their fighters in. Or a vehicle that the Iraqi aircraft ground crews would have used. Does anyone know of anything?
Trumpeter has a 1/35 model of the Soviet ZIL-57 truck (6X6) which is similar to but slightly larger than the US Army’s standard 6 X 6. This would be used for hauling a pretty good group of pilots, a crew for a cargo plane, ground crew or maintenance equipment. The GAZ line of Soviet vehicles has several in the HUMVEE or 4 X 4 category of vehicles. The GAZ-67B looks very similar to our WW-II Jeep. Zvezda has a ZIS-151 that is almost identical to the ZIL-57
It’s very possible that WW II/Korean War vintage Soviet vehicles were used by the Iraq during Gulf War I. The Russians have a history of retaining in storage large amounts of obsolete but usuable equipment of all types (waste not, want not I guess). I remember seeing pictures of knocked out Pzkw IVs and T-34-85s that were used by the Syrians in the Golan Heights during the 1967 war. They had been supplied by the Russians and dug in as pill boxes.
And, if the armor recognition manuals the Army had are any guide, Warsaw Pact forces used a lot of thin skinned vehicles of WW II vintage until the very end. The Czechs had a version of the Sdkfz 251 in production until the late 60’s - not as and APC but as a scout vehicle.
I think that I have a book that may have some pictures… when I get home from work tonight I’ll see if I can find it. I can make some scans for you… or even snail mail it to you so you can borrow it. Now if I can just remember where I put it.
Ok… Bones… I didn’t forget about you. I dug out the book and looked through it, sorry there’s nothing there. I was thinking there were some shots of jeep like utility vehicles but there’s nothing like that. Not Iraqi equipment anyway… lots of pics of US and UK equipment though. Sorry wish I could be more help.
Yea, it’ll be my first. At this point, however, I’m not sure if it’s going to happen. I’ve built models for many years but figures and dioromas are things I don’t have much experience with. [B)]
Detailing a dio isn’t too bad in this scale but I agree with you about the figures. That is why I like 72nd scale. A base coat in the right colors, a wash and some highlights and you are good to go. We have several very good figure painters in our club. One guy does everything from 5mm up to 1/4th scale and is great at them all. Got an article from him on our site for 72nd -48th scale figures. Some good hints but you need a little more detail in 35th. http://www.ipmsslc.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=15
