Iraqi paint question

Hi gang,

I am currently working on my “3D photo album” of vehicles that I worked around and saw while in Iraq. I am gettin ready to build some Iraqi armor and was wondering what color you folks use for that. I remember that it was very light and faded.

Thanks guys!

Don’t think they followed any FS type standards. From what I saw, any light to medium sand would work fine.

Hey Ron,

I agree with Gino . I just searched a google of pics of Iraqi vehicles and the very light /yellow pale sand seems to be prevelent. The weathering and abuse factor really differentiates them. One common thread that I see is a very low standard of maintenance and discipline as far as vehicle stowage and uniformity is concerned. The hallmark of a professional army is uniformity to a certain degree on the AFV’s in the field. Although dirty and haggard you can always tell the quality of the crew by the appearance of thier vehicle.

I collected paint chips during Desert Storm. When our units captured T 62 finally arrived after demilling I got to repaint it. As close as I remember, The closest standard color to the original color was International Harvestors “buckskin”. There were different shades on different vehicles. If they were where the smoke was they had a grey cast.

I have pictures of captured Iraqi tanks and they range in color from a brown to tan to khaki drab. The majority of the vehicles are tan in color but vehicles from the north of iraq are khaki drab in color, IMO.

Thanks for all the great replies, I was there and saw a butt load of captured stuff and destroyed stuff. I was just wondering if anyone had found a good match for it. I think that I will just mix some yellow and white into MM sand and see what I get.

do iraqi do BOS ? or servicing their vehicle ?

I’m sure they serviced and maintained them, but when you are a country that is being held under UN sanctions and your former main supporter (Soviet Union) can no longer provide you with assistance, it is hard to maintain vehicles. Lack of parts and money along with the sanctions left their vehicle fleets looking pretty bad, especially their older vehicles. The parts and money that was available went to Republican Guard units with the newest and best equipment while the rest of the army had to do with what was left.

As I recall from the first gulf war…Iraqi armor numbered in the several thousands, however, it was always speculated as the the actual number of pieces in working order due to the reasons brought up by other members in this thread…

I like British Armor Sand for the Iraqi tanks…It’s a pale sand color from Model master…

Enjoy,
Tank

I would go with the British Armor Sand also then weather so that the green paint underneith is starting to show through due to wearing off along walkways.
