Intro to GB's and upcoming builds. Long post (get snacks)

bish great post. summed up very well.

this needed to be stated and you did a fantastic job.

i am on a major restriction for group builds myself, also self imposed. i have one that i am part of on another site and now i am looking at whether to start up a pearl build this year.

No russian stuff for me atm, I dont own any planes but my big Flanker. And I’m not ready at all for such a big chunk of plastic.

There would only be my IS-2 left for something russian, bit it is 80% finished so not usable at all in a GB.

Maybe I’ll pick Tamiyas BT-7 up someday…

Cheers, Clemens

Joe, i know what you mean. I can se me getting drawn into more and more GB’s, i can just help myself.

Anyone have the number for GB anonomous.

But, if it inspires me to get building, all the better.

Budd, while i may not go in for those little country GB’s, i think they are a great idea. GB with 109’s, 190’s and Tiger’s are all great, but we can’t forget all the otehrs as well. And theres some kit there that you might not normally see. I have a few MiG’s so i would be in on a Russian GB.

i remember when i first joined here and got into the group builds i had signed up for like ten or so. lucky for me they fell in such a way i had little overlap of builds. i can see myself taking an assembly from one build and trying to fit it into another.

Hey Bish, when you find that number, send it my way…I’m starting to feel it myself! [:P]

Here is what I have for AA:

Tamiya 88mm

Tamiya Mobelwagen

Academy Wirlbelwind

Tamiya 20mm FLAK 38

Italeri Sd.Kfz 10/4 with FLAK 30

I don’t think I’m ready for the Italeri yet. But out of the others, which would you say would be a good first kit to do? Thanks Bish!

Eagle90

Thanks for this post Bish.

GB’s are a great motivator, and I find I learn more about history because when a GB comes up that I have a incline to participate now I start researching a topic and then researching a kit in my price range.

Time to kick start the Canadian GB…and I have an idea for Towed Artillery one later in the year…

Then there’s a weekend madness…secret santa…

Awesome post Bish!

This should be stickied so that it is easily found in this particular forum. Lots of great answers to many common GB questions.

I was thinking along these lines myself. [^o)] Maybe it’s time I take a break from hosting and just become a follower.

Bish, that halftrack build sounds pretty cool as does the AA. Just not sure which to sign up for.

Eagle, i did build the old tamiya 88 many years ago and its not a bad kit. I also built the Mobelwagen with the 4 20mm guns and that was nice as well. Unfortunatly i don’t have these kits any more. So now i have both the Tamiya Mobelwagens in the stash and will be building the 3.7cm version. You can’t go far wrong with a Tamiya kit. From your list, i would go for the 88mm or the Mobelwagen myself.

Chris, it will be nice to see that canadian GB get off the ground. I think we had a towed arty GB a few years ago, so it could well be timed for another one.

Eric, i have tried to spread out the two armour GB’s but if people show interest in both, i may just put the halftrack GB back a couple of months. It would still fit within 2014 and it would give people time to commit to both as i know many guys will be interested in both. So Jan 1st isn’t a hard and fast start date.

Thanks G-J, i am glad people are finding it useful.

I am still kinda new to GB’s and am only in my second one. Did the twin boom GB and am currently in FSM WW1 Aeroplane GB, which I am learning alot about a ropic I Never did before. For the othe GB ideas I love them all and have a kit for each one. For the flying tank would an AH-64 Appache be appropriate? Have an SA-2 from Egypt for the duck hunter, and an F-4d skyray for the carrier. An idea I had for a GB was transport aircraft. Basically anything that carries people or supplies, military or civilian. And Bish you are right. GB’s can be kind of addictive.

Shiv, i like the idea of the transport GB. I can’t commit to anything new for a while, but if the timing is right, i would be in. But sounds like you have your hands full with a few GB’s for a while.

Transport aircraft!! Now there’s one I haven’t seen yet. Sounds great! dig, dig, dig Well, I do seem to have a PE-8 with markings for Stalin’s personal plane. I suppose that would fit the bill. It is HUGE though, will definitely be the biggest model I have built yet!

For the D-day GB, and I am not sure that I am right, the Germans had 2 aircraft show up and I think 1 was piloted by Pillier or something like that I have to check. Was it FW-190’s that they flew?

CARRIER GB is on!!!

Sort of correct. Pips Priller and his wingman strafed the beach head(omaha?) on D-Day, in Fw 190 A-7s or -8s. There were many German aircraft in the air this day, but they simply didn’t make it over the beach head, as they got caught up tangling with allied fighters and bombers ahead of the beach (invasion front).

Nathan is correct. The Germans managed to launch 100+ sorties on the day, but of cause Pillers escapade in the mivie leave the impression that that was the only one.

Indeed it was an Fw 190, but off the top of my head i am not sure which one.

Pretty sure the Werknumber is unkown Bish. But date-wise it would mean either an A-7 or A-8, in typical JG 1 camo.

nathan, i recon you are right with that. I know he mostly flew a Black 13, but i don’t think i have ever seen an image of the actual aircraft he flew on that day. So i think with that one, there would have to be a bit of guess work.

sight for a kit of the FW-190 A-7 that a guy built with Pips numbers on them.

Well the halftrack GB sounds cool. I’m not sure I’m ready for an AA, but do have something in mind.

I’m going to try and finish my tiger and then see what happens.
