intermixability of acrylics

just a general question-- how do tamiya & model master react with each other?

also , i recently ordered 'aircraft colors ’ – please share if any/ all are intermixable (it will increase my paint inventory threefold if possible!)

Thx!!

You can find mainly two kinds of acrylic : those which accept alcohol, and those which don’t ( though I have acrylic clear coat of Talens brand which you thin with…mineral spirit )
so the problem seems to settle more on the thinning side than on the pigment side; only one way to be sure: experiment; you don’t need to waste a big amount of paint to see the results : mix or emusion. As far as Aircraft colors are concerned, I think they are made by Vallejo so it is water only thinning.

Dog - if you are using aircraft colors by Vallejo (will say made in Spain somewhere on the bottle, also they are squeeze bottles instead of the normal cylinder glass bottles) they are SUPPOSED to be prethinned… if you decide to thin them I suggest either distilled water OR the Vallejo branded thinner. It has an adhesive aid in it so it helps it stick to the body more. (more than likely Elmers glue dissolved in it haha) I have used both and prefer their brand of thinner.

forgot to answer the question: I’ve mixed Tamiya and MM, and I have also mixed Color of Eagles (made by Vallejo) and MM with no probs… so I imagine the Tamiya/Vallejo mix would work as well!!!

Thanks Tom-- I did take your advice from a previous post and primed using Krylon , then used vallejo thinner w/ Color of Eagles – using a brand new Badger 100 LG–very impressed – hoping vallejo will offer same for armor soon.

yeah I really am in love with their paints, in fact almost my whole collection of acrylics now is Color of Eagles… There just seems to be a few gaps though and I wish they would expand. The hardest part for me in learning how to use them was the patience to only cover a little at a time. I tend to be impatient in my painting. It’s starting to show as my end results are looking a LOT better due to that!

Good luck to ya! glad you like them. Also keep checking www.greatmodels.com … they have sales on them almost monthly. Sometimes as low as around $1.85 a bottle…

ok I am getting forgetful… last night painting the seat on my FW-190 I mixed Color of Eagles and Tamiya with no probs… thinned with tamiya thinner (after mixing the colors together)

Although I haven’t done a lot of it, I have not experienced any compatibility issues with mixing Tamiya and ModelMaster acrylics.
