Interior color for German SdKfz 250/251 SPW's?

Dear all,

Does anyone know what is the correct interior color
for German WWII Sd.Kfz. 250 and 251 halftracks
(I’m interested in open-topped, i.e. like 250/1 or
251/1, versions)? Should it be the same as the
exterior color (in my case RAL 7021 for the Schwarzgrau
color scheme) or something else like, for example,
RAL 1001 Elfenbein?

THX,

Serge

Yep, the interior (i.e. open part of the halftracks) were basecoated in the exterior color). But there have been some exceptions if you look at references pics.

THX Moses!

I started worrying that noone except me in this forum
is interested in german WWII halftracks
Actually, I managed to find one reference that confirms
your information:

The comment to Pic. 5 on this page provides some
details on the color of the interior and even benches in
a typical Sd Kfz 250 halftrack.
I still wonder if a close-topped modification of 250, like
Sd Kfz 253 “forward observer” vehicle, should be
painted Elfenbein inside.
Regarding references, they are my main problem. I found
only one book on 250/251 and it does not show interiors.
Everything else is special orders or out of print.
We’re lucky to have http://www.kithobbyist.com/AFVInteriors/

I’ve got some on my website:

Thanks, Pierre!

I bookmarked your page for further reference. I’m working
on 250/11 right now, but I really enjoyed the photos of
the 250D halftrack with assault bridges (pionere company
vehicle, I guess?). I hope I would be able to make a model
of this particular modification someday soon.

Serge

I have to say some great pictures of the interior of a 251 Pierre, but I just thought I would mention not to rely too much on examples in museums. Most of these vehicles have been repainted, and//or have been in service with other countries after wwII.

Having said that, I concur that the interior of 250/251s were probably painted the same color as the exterior. Here are some links to some models, perhaps you could compare.

Hope this helps

I have seen articles (can’t remember where offhand) suggesting that the interiors of late-war 251 Ausf D’s were often left in bare red or green primer, which would make an interesting contrast to the exterior colour. I have the /9, /17(D), /21 and an einheits SdKfz 11 in my stack. Any thoughts or evidence, anyone?

At least one of those articles also suggested that the exteriors of late-war AFV’s in general could be left in red primer with the Mittelsand applied as a camouflage rather than an overall coat in order to save paint.

I was considering leaving some areas such as cab interiors, interior wheel faces, chassis and wheel arches on these models in bare primer colour as a contrast.
