In the film ’ Indiana Jones and The Raiders of the Lost Ark’ there is a German cargo plane that was going to carry the Ark from Egypt to Berlin…til it gets blown up.
What type of plane is it ?
Does anyone make a model kit of it ?
…or is it a plane especially designed for the film.
HELP !
It was a film prop. There was a die cast of it but I can’t remember where. There was also an article in FSM about how to make a decent replica of it from the diecast.
I believe it was one those German “X” planes that was designed but never built (I could be wrong about that, though). I understand that Disney sold metal models of this, but they are no longer available.
It was a custom prop built at Vickers Aircraft specifically for the movie. Originally, it was going to be a small jet, then a huge 4 engined flying wing, budget concerns cut it down to the two engined flying wing we see in the movie. Although the wing could have flown (It had all of the right avionics hooked up), it was trucked to the set and assembled there. Sketches and pics can be found in “From Star Wars to Indiana Jones: The Best of the Lucasfilm Archives”. It is a great book, especially for superdetailing star wars models.
Thanks for the info guys, but I must say i am disappointed it is a prop and not a real German plane.
I am also suprised that a kit manufacturer did not lock on to the popularity of the film and make the plane in kit form…Revell and Airfix often make film props kits and cash in on their success…and it could have been made into a good Indiana Jones diorama scene…maybe one has been done allready.
You might be able to find one of those models on EBay. You might have to pay some cash, but it may be worth it.
They were available at the Disney parks. Since the Indiana Jones show is still done at both Disneyland and Disneyworld, they may still sell it at the gift shops but I think production was stopped a few years ago.
