In the first movie of Indiana Jones “The Temple of Doom”, there is a german war plane that the Ark is supposed to be put on in the desert. My question is, is there a model of that plane and if so, who makes it?
The clossest you could get to it is the HO -v11. but it was experamental at least as i understand.hope this might give you abase to start with?
The Sept. 2003 issue of FSM has an articlce about converting a Disney toy of the aircraft into a model.
Black Sun Models do a kit of this fictitious machine in 1/72nd scale. It’s GRP and nearly 100 pounds stirling, (that’s proper money from the UK) and is available from Comet Miniatures.
I guess you mean “Raiders of the Lost Ark”, “Temple of the Doom” was the second one.
There’s some toys of that flying wing, you can get it from ebay, they are quite rare though.
I wondered long time ago, actually since I was a kid when I saw for first time Raiders of the Lost Ark, what the heck is that airplane?
Some years ago when I got the Indiana trilogy dvd’s (YEAHHHH) I remember when I wondered about that flying wing so I start my research about that thing and the only stuff I found about that was:
Spielberg choosed a flying wing for the movie to represent the andvanced and futuristic german aircraft in ww2, the producer designer Norman Reynolds used a Northrop Corp prototype (which still dunno what prototype was), the film designer Ron Cobb made some drawings to make it look even more unique, the plane was builded at England for Vickers Aircraft Company.
This was one of the early drawings for the movie’s flying wing.
Personally I think they picked up the actual blueprints from the N-1M prototype:
But Im also think that the film designer had in mind the Luft 46 Lippisch Li.P04 since the begining.
At the end well as you know, the result was this:
Oh by the way, did you know that Tom Selleck was originally choosed to play Dr Jones role but due he was shooting Magnum P.I tv series, Harrison Ford was selected instead.

Disney actually makes a small scale toy version of this “aircraft”. Someone on this forum a few years back cleaned it up and reworked it to be less toylike in appearance. Don’t recall who at the moment. I believe that you can only purchase this in the parks.
Check eBay for occasional appearances of this item.
I contacted Disney about a year ago to see if they still carried the toy and was told they don’t. I found one on e-bay. It’s a Micro Action toy and requires some work to make it look like a model. The Black Sun kit from England is about $115 plus shipping in US dollars, a bit pricey.
Yeah sorry about that. I realized that I made a mistake on the movie title. But thank you for your input on this. On the Tom Selleck issue, I dont think the film would have been as big as it was if he actually did it. Thats pretty interesting though. Thanks again.[:)]

Yup, it was a 1933 Waco UBF-2 float plane version… “I hate snakes Jock!” … haha one of my favorites phrases of the movie.
Now what about in the third part “The Last Crusade” 2 nazi planes that are chasing Indy and Indy’s dad in a motorcycle, they try to lose them getting into a tunnel, one of the planes couldn’t pull up and went trough a tunnel ripping off the wings and it pass by Indy and Indy’s dad while driving the motorcycle, haha one of the funniest part of the movie.
Do you know what planes were used for that scene?
As I recall they were Swiss-built Pilatus training aircraft (don’t recall the model, not quite up on my Swiss training aircraft) but I believe that they were of the type that was later modified for use as target towing aircraft (with the really long nose and twin tails).

Yeah just as you said Mike, they were Pilatus P-2 trainer swiss-built.
The " long nosed " target tug is not a Pilatus design. It’s the EKW C-3603.
Good call, Dogsbody. Either way, that’s a reaaaaaally long nose… I can’t imagine how much lighter the turboprop must have been then the original powerplant to have to stick it that far out there.

Hey speaking of Temple of doom. Lets not forget the Ford Trimotor.
hehe I was just asking for a 1/48 Ford Trimotor in another thread, since we were talking about Indy’s movies it remind me that classic bird I wanted to build since long time ago.

Stephen, wow! that’s cool… since that wing was made just for a movie and just for some short scenes I didn’t know that it had a name! Now seaching at google as BV-86 I just found out, what Gordon just said some posts above, there’s available a resin kit in 1/72 scale, manufactured by Black Sun Models, kinda pricie though! Like $115 bucks, even more expensive en some other places!
