In-progress battle damaged BMP pics

i just started fiddling with my pastels, this is my first stab at it. any advice for this with pastels? i’ve never attempted battle damage, and this is only my second armor build. and i just bought pastels. i know it has to be random, but here goes.

Looking good Brent. I’ll enclose a few pictures of a couple PT-76’s we traded shots with. Now keep in mind this is different type ammo. We shot them with HE and Heat rounds.back in the 60’s . But mainly maybe you can look at the metal and will help some.

Youv’e got the rusty colors pretty good. Couple things I see. The holes are too neat and smooth edged. The area arount the holes would be buckled and caved in. WHen a round goes through armor, it transfers so much energy that it breaks welds and buckles the surrounding plates as well, especially as large of a round as through the front glacis plate. Also, you should have some type of basic interior if you are going to have it all opened up like that. It doesn’t look realistic to have it empty.

Usually, the whole vehicle will not burn and oxidize either. Here are some photos to see what I mean.

Here is what the interior looks like to get an idea.

Here are more interior pics.

Hope that helps.

I agree with the previous posts. I don’t understand the droopy gun tube. Gun tubes are tough. I have seen a bowed one because the tank rolled and the tube stuck in the ground. I have seen one that was missing part of the end due to an explosion in the barrel and due to another tank round hitting the barrel. I do like your technique with the pastels. It is getting the right look.

Great job for a first attempt. Does need some base color though. Unless you are doing one that has sat there for a year or two!

[:D]i dont know too much about that armour, but i think you are doining a great job so far.[:D]

Looks great until now!
I think it needs more different tones of pastel, including some dusting above rust.
you can include some patches of base tone.Note that with fire, colors seems to change a …little![:)]
A little light grey dust is also useful!

Very usefull reference photos wf6h, HeavyArty.
I think the rusty / burnt looks very convincing rufio

For a first attempt, that’s impressive work. I’d take all the advice already given and just tweak what you’ve got a little. Like scorn said, it really does look like it’s sat in the open for a while (and I mean that as a compliment).

Keep us updated.

first off, thanks for all the kind words. it can be a BMP in my dio left over from the first gulf war. how bout that idea? i can probably fix the tube. honestly, i didnt think it was realistic, but got a little carried away playing with fire…

That looks AWESOME.

That’s very good progress. The vehicle you show seems to have been completely engulfed by flames. I would add some variation in the rusting and burned sections by varying the tone of the pastels you use.

Great job and very convincing. Bryan

Looks great to me! The coloring seems quite realistic to my untrained eyes.
As mentioned, the way the gun tube is bent seems a bit unnatural, but then again you see all kinds of nutty results from battle!
