In praise of the Airfix Lancaster.

[:D]I recieved a kit of the Dam Buster Lancaster by Airfix for my birthday and I must say that I am most impressed with the kit.
The fit seem to be verry good as is the general shape and dimentions.
The most interesting thing about the kit is that with all the included, but not needed, parts just about any Lancaster ever produced can be made from this kit. It the remolded standard Lancaster all of the marks of this fabulous aircraft can be built.
If your building skills are up to it even the civil Lancs can be constructed from the simple BOAC conversion to the jet and turbo-prop test beds of Rolls Royce and the Sweedish Airforce jet in the bomb bay.
Great value in a single kit. Thanks Kids.

Hello Dai jones.

I wonder if it’s the revell 1:72? they also realesed it in 1:72.
Or is it the legendery, I once told, 1:48?

No it is a compleatly new kit from Airfix in 1/72. The Revel kit is not one of their best with outline problems as well as having the small fuselage windows enlarged to resemble airliner ports.
I cant remember Airfix ever producing a 1/48 Lanc.
Dai

Is that true? Its a completely new kit and not a reissue?
Is the panel lines recessed as well?

thanks and sorry for all the question marks.

AHA! a new kit!

Now that’s changes the whole picture! very nice to learn this. I have heard of a 1:48 lancester from people, that at the time, I considered as my model guros. I have heard it from two different, unrelated people, so I guess it’s true.
They said it happen years ago. I think they also told me there was a 1:48 Halifax, again from Airfix.
I’d still like to know (like obiwan) are the panel lines recessed, etc, etc…?

BTW, can we be certain now it NOT the very old, three colour, Matchbox ki?

it is the 1980’s release with raised panel lines, which I normally avoid like the plague - but this is a really good kit.
the fuselage windows are not clear so you have the option of painting them or cutting away the frames for a different mark if you should wish to convert it ( it comes with a standard bomb bay as well)
There are also BBMF and a Grand Slam kits as well

I don’t think Airfix ever released one, but Tamiya has a 1/48 Lancaster, recently re-released with four electric motors to spin the props.
I’ve never built it, but I’ve heard mixed reviews.

yep tamia did standard/dambuster and grand slam versions of the lanc in 1/48th. i have four airfix lancs on my “to build” pile (as well as two revell ones) one airfix is a grand slam lanc the rest are standard and the revell ones are one standard and one dambuster that i have almost completed construction of. i do agree that the new airfix lanc is much better than their old one. airfix did a halifax B111 but it was in 1/72nd and required quite a bit of work to make it into a decent model.
hope this helps.

Happy Birthday Dai!
Are you ready to retire to “5 Beers” yet?
Regards, and enjoy the kit,
Bruce

Guday Bruce,
Not quite. We have to sell one of our investment properties and my wife has given herself until 30/6/05 to retire and then we are off!
I’m collecting quite a bit of track for the railway. (oops I probably shouldnt have mentioned that!)
