Subject says it all. I’m looking for a good but would prefer great manufacturer of a Panzer II, later version. I generally go with Tamiya and am quiet loyal to their line, however I have purchased and built Dragon kits.
Okay experts shot away, who has the best kit to model a Panzer II???
It depends on which “Ausf.” you are particular to. The Tamiya PzKpfw II Ausf. F/G kit is an outdated kit that is simply detailed but generally builds into a decent kit. Long past its prime, but a great starter kit. Detail-wise, it is probably the poorest of the bunch.
Tasca does two versions of the PzKpfw II Ausf. L Luchs (Lynx). Great kits but are rather expensive. Techmod, ICM (now Alanger) do the Luchs as well. Nice kits themselves, but not as nice as Tasca’s.
Alan does a pretty nice PzKpfw II Ausf. C that Dragon also reboxes in a regular and DAK version. The Dragon versions are hard to find but the original Alan one is relatively available for around $10.
Techmod and ICM/Alanger both do a PzKpfw II Ausf. F Flamingo flame tank. Again, decent kits.
I think Rob pretty much filled you in.The Tamiya kit is just dieing for a PE set as is the ICM Luchs. The Tasca offerings are superb but pricey.I haven’t seen the Alan offering.I really enjoyed the Tamiya kit as it goes together well, but as I said I added a PE set to bring it up to standard.JMHO
Yeah, but tossing a $20 PE set at the Tamiya kit is a waste since it also requires new tracks (no detail on inner surface). As Durr states, once you add the necessary upgrades to the Tamiya kit, it is no longer a bargin. I think the Alan IIC is the best value unless you want a Luchs. Then it would be the Tasca kit to get.
Yep, I rethought this one and the more information I gathered on the Tamiya versus Alan versus Tasca. The Tasca has won out.
Especially after factoring in the added cost of aftermarket parts as Durr stated the Tasca is the one I shall purchase. I have one quick question though. I read the Tasca comes with ModelKasten tracks is this true, because I prefer the Fruils and have limitied experience with ModelKasten.
I have both the Alan IIC (reboxed as DML) and II D as well as the Tamiya IIF/G. All are fairly limited and provide the opportunity to update the kits with PE and aftermarket options. Rumour has it that Dragon will actually be releasing a new 3 in 1 Pz II next year, so keep your fingers crossed as this will be the proverbial duck’s guts of early Pz II kits.
Heater:
The Tasca Luchs kits comes with very nice vinyl tracks, not MK ones (you may be thinking of the Tristar Pz I series which comes with these). I have the Friul tracks for the Luchs as well – not sure if I’ll use them frankly – the kit supplied ones are very nice.
Well the Tasca kit 35006 and the Friuls have been ordered. I read reviews and they really spoke well of the kit tracks however I’m a Friul nut since I put my first set together for a Panzer IV. Those and Rustall make a fantastic looking kit. IMHO.
Thanks for the input and advice. This will be Santa’s present to the old Heater…and my vacation model.
