i used pastels to get this effect, which didn’t turn out as hoped: basically not fresh enough in terms of the whitewash, but seems to look ok.
problem is that there is so much pastel dust i can’t ever touch the thing now![B)]
You’ve got my vote, nmayhew… beautiful worn finish, I like it! [:)]
Thanks,
Take care,
Frank
thank you oldhooker glad you liked it![:)]
Very nice work I think the pastels came out good
Jason
Looks great, but didn’t you seal the pastels with a flat coat ?
Regards, Rick
looks good to me
Hey nmayhew-
Great job on your IL2! I’d love some more info on how you accomplished that great finish…I’m going to be building a p-40 pretty soon and I was thinking of doing a lend-lease soviet winter scheme…so any tips will be greatly appreciated!
Once again, great job! [:D]
if you seal them with a flat coat, you should eb able to handle it just fine. Very nice build. I like it.
I also think it looks great and agree with rjk on sealing with a flat or semigloss coat.
not bad friend!![tup]
Nice looking IL-2 Nick.
jay12472 mkhoot saltydog thank you.
rjkplasticmod Tankmaster7 wibhi2 i consulted these forums at the time as my kit was a walking dust cloud, and the consensus was that whilst a flat coat would work for most armour kits, in this case i would have to be careful as flat coat over white makes it turn a lot darker.
taking this advice, i gave it a v light coat of future/flat and managed to seel in most of the pastels, although the finish did move a few shades darker as expected; this was a shame as it is meant to be brand new and NOT heavily weathered, white wash.

this was the first kit i pre-shaded, so:
very roughly put your base caots down of green up top, blue underbelly
spray black (i should have used v dark brown) in thin but rough fashion on all panel lines
kit will look like dog’s breakfast at this stage but don’t worry
SLOWLY build up coverage of 2 base colours again, allowing pre-shading to show through
use artists pastels to fill in main panel lines with white - make sure pastels are NOT oil based - this way if you screw up, just wipe it off and start over
light sealing coat
note that if i do this scheme again, i will spray white over panel lines rather than use pastel - i am doing this on a Tiger over in the armour forums and look a lot better i think, but that’s just my opinion.
hope it all works ot.
finally, tigerman it’s nick not nathan, but what’s in a name? sticks and stones and all that![(-D][(-D][(-D]
Hey Nick, what scale and kit is it?
Thad
Very nice build of a neat plane.
KINGTHAD, mucker thank you for your interest
the kit is by accurate miniatures in 1/48 and readily available on ebay etc, and not as rare as the il2m-3 (2 seater version which loks a bit cooler!)
kind regards,
Nicholas
Very nice paint job, that goes for your 109 & 190 posts as well, thanks for the pics…
Excellent job, Nicholas!
nick another very impressive build from your desk.
