Quick question about the interior colors for an IL2-m3 Shturmovik ( tamiya model ) : what are the right ones
Tamiya sweep the issue under the rug by basically recommending XF-22 RLM Grey Matt everywhere. I feel it’s a bit greenish, versus Eduard Photoetched cockpit parts that are a very light grey, slightly tinted blue.
I read here and there ( mostly Massimo’s excellent website ) that AL-14 steel grey ( I think xf-53 is close enough ), was the go-to color for russian aircrafts. However, some interiors were not even primed, some were only primed with zinc chromate or ALG-5 and not painted ( or paint was lost )… It’s confusing!
Those are restored planes, which seem to show light panels, green control column, and different floor colors :
Meanwhile, the myriad of pictures on the internet also show dark grey + black panels depictions, making it even more confusing.
It seems very complicated, which, I guess, is the result of super-mass production.
I’m tempted to try the darker grey on floor, boxes and sides, leaving only the PE panels in their original color, but who knows, maybe there’s a concensus before I apply artistic licence, go mad, and apply fushia?
I’m no expert in Russian aircraft, but since the information is all over the map, I would recommend
going with the steel grey and whichever of the contrasting colors you’ve found that bring out the detail of the cockpit that satisfies you. Good luck on your build, looking forward to seeing it completed.
I’ve not built the Tamiya Sturmovik, but I have built the Accurate Miniatures kit a couple of times. Their instructions call for interior grey-green, Federal Standard 34226. A couple of their paint call outs are no longer produced or difficult to find, but they give codes for Humbrol (92), Gunze Sangyo Aqueous (70), and Gunze Sangyo Mr Color (60).
Yeah, I was thinking of doing something along those lines, honestly. Mostly dark/neutral gray with panel accents. The cockpit is hardly visible but still it’s nice to know what it should have been, at least for educationnal purposes
Oh, interesting ! And somehow in line with some of the variations I’ve seen as it seems close to the ALG-5 primer. I could also have a quick lookie at the Zvezda instructions sheets. Hadn’t thought of that, actually. I don’t think there would be too much difference between a one seater and a two seater of even an il-2 and an il-2m3 in terms of interior paints.
